Towing a boat w/a 3rd Gen
Towing a boat w/a 3rd Gen
There's a boat in my rear view mirror,
, & 'bout time!!!
U-Haul Hitch #24643 Sportframe Rec. for about $200, (including installation, wiring harness, ball, the tacos & beer I had while I waited a little more than an hour).
I wish I had pics but, I'm having
no problems with towing, handling, braking, etc. with a 100% stock, '91 305 TPI, 5-speed w/116k miles.
I'm towing about 1500-1600lbs of boat w/trailer, spinning 'round 2600-3100rpms in 4th, doing 58-63mph, getting 'bout 13-14mpg, (19-21 w/out boat).

Too bad. Not that you have installed a hitch (I have one on my RS 'vert also). But too bad that Draw-Tite (who made the hitch you bought) has discontinued the hitch I have. It was also called the "Sportframe" but is a much lower profile and not so ugly. The old model number was 24001, but it no longer shows up on their product list. I used to pull a 2000 lb Hilo travel trailer and my 2 PWC trailer. I've retired the Camaro as a tow vechicle since I have a much better one now ('98 Dodge RAM QC 2500 V10). Lon
I'm a guitarist on a working man's income & the 'Form is a "Working Man's Ride", not much on looks but, gets me to work every morning, get's me water sking when the water is like glass, to the bay when the striper's are hitting, win some-lose some, hauls my PA & amp to gigs where-ever, it'd be nice to have 4 cars but,.....I need a fish finder now.

I also tow with my Camaro Convt. I custom made my 1" receiver hitch so that it would be as hidden as possible. I also changed the rear springs to Moog cargo springs and that helps take some of the bounce out of pulling a trailer. The stock springs just can't take the tongue weight back there. My new 3.42 gears helped with towing quite a bit as well.

My mistake, pulling a boat with a smog bogged 305 with 116,000 miles is great for longevity.

My car used to tow a boat for a while too when it had the 200,000+ LG4. I wouldn't worry about the engine as much as i would worry about the clutch. Especially on the boat ramp.

My decision to tow with my Camaro came as commandment from the wife. I could either get rid of my Camaro convertible and buy a truck or I could put a hitch on the Camaro. So I put a hitch on the car. It can safely pull 2000lbs without risking damage. The engine and trans are the same as the trucks. Trucks just have a frame and better brakes so they can tow more. My favorite tow was when I pulled a 94 Mustang GT convertible on a dolly behind my Camaro for a few miles.
