I bought the car with these wheels on it and the guy said the fronts rubbed a little when you turned it tight, he was understating it a bit, the front left tire rubs, it's the only one that does, and only when you're turning left. I just had a brake job done when I was bringing it back from FL and I looked at the suspension briefly and there didn't seem to be anything odd under there.
The tires are 245/50-16s
Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?
Oh, I noticed that the front and back wheels are different, are the ones with the deeper lip supposed to be on the front or on the back?

Thanks,
Jeff

I have an 88 GTA. The rims with the deeper lips are supposed to be on the front.

i know on my iroc-z i had, the rear rims said rear on the inside of them and the front also said fronts on them, that would definitely cause rubbing. when i had my 1988 formula 350 the guy i bought the car from said he recently had gotten new tires on all fours and the shop actually put the rims on wrong, and that caused the fronts to rub and actually burned wholes in the plastic inner fender wells.

Know what else causes them to burn holes in the inner fenders? Bell Tech lowering spindles. Got two inner fenders with holes in them. I lowered it and waas just too damn lazy to jack it back up and massage the metal under there so I could re-shape the plastic. Guess I'll be doing that this weekend cuz I've got new tires coming.

Rubbing seems normal, at least on my car,

Look at my swaybar.
Anyone else's rub there?

Wow. Off the top of my head I'll have to say I don't think so, Zepher, but I'll take a look and get back to you. I'm actually working on replacing all my front and rear swaybar bushings and endlinks, but I can't find any bushings for 36mm swaybars. I sent an email to Spohn's, just waiting for a reply now.

I've heard people using the 34mm bushings on the 36mm bar with no problems. I too should replace my bushings as well.

Zepher - My tires rub there as well. I guess you just have to deal with a little rubbin' if you want a lowered car with decent sized tires on it. I really don't mid a little rub every now and then. I have new plastics on the way, and I'll work them over with a heat gun and my old tires so they fit in the fender as tight to the body as possible. I'll let you know how it goes. By the way, I'm still lookin' for a good deal on those side ground effects you have. I've got my eye on a set, but the seller and I just can't seem to get close on price. he thinks I'm gonna pay $400 for the 4 pieces I need. (they are new GM, but I ain't paying $400.)

I had to wait for a long time to find those door peices. I got the rocker panels from a friend for $35. I ended up paying $125 for the door peices with the brackets from a guy on here that had the entire set. No one needed the entire set so he parted them out.

My price on the door peices from the dealer are $100 each and $40 for the brackets. Regular price is $140 each and $50 each.

I can get that same price from the dealer (ain't being a jobber great!), but they can't get 'em for me. I'll keep my eyes open for 'em. I just hope I get them before I get my car painted.
I'm also lookin' for a nice GTA spoiler (I'll buy the $400 one from GT Auto if I can't find a good junkyard one) or maybe the 91-92 style areo wing. I've spies in every J/Y in Colorado that still deals with third gens. C'mon guys bail me out....
Anyway, thanks for your help on those parts, I just love that look.:hail:

Back when third-gens were new, they rubbed a little at full lock with the 16x8 wheels. Especially when the tires got replaced with a different brand(some tire brands have a larger 245/50R16).

I have 255/55/16's all around and i hardly rub at all. I'm lowered a little over an inch. I rub just a little on the left side at full lock. Not trying to showboat here or anything, I'm just wondering whats up?

With my car lowered and the 17" WS6 wheels, I rub the the front and back of the front fenderwell when I turn as well as the inner fenderwell and the sway bar. I actually broke my drivers side ground effect on the front fender when I was backing up and turning, the wheel grabbed the ground effect and broke it.

Mine rub the plastic liner at the lip of the fender at near full lock, mostly noticable in reverse. Anyone else have this problem? I've been told in the past that the plastic liner should really be installed on the inside of the fender lip rather than the outside, where it is installed from the factory. That would solve the contact in my case...

This may sound stupid, but are you sure it's not an alignment problem? That was what was causing my right front tire to rub when I turned right. After a wheel alignment, all was fine.

I was thinking about that too. Or maybe the left front tie-rod end is getting worn out....

My car used to not rub at all with the stock Iroc wheels. Then the mechanics and I at work put a PST complete front end kit on it(Polygraphite control arm bushings, new ball joints, idler arm, center link, swaybar end links and bushings, inner and outer tie rods with Hotchkis tie rod sleeves.). Now it rubs more than I would like it to. We have done 2 alignments on it since with 2 different machines, with no change.

Well, I have the Eibach Pro Kit, SPD spacers with 4th gen offset-spec 17x9 rims and 275/40/17s and I only rub slightly on the plastic inner parts of the wheel wells of either side when in reverse and at full lock..... No rubbing at all on the lips. I can't say I have ever hit the swaybar either.... Are you sure you have it centered correctly? Does it hit on both sides? Alignment definately plays a role in this.....

I paid $330 for all of the front end parts. The front end kit is like $150, but when you add $50 Hotchkis tie rod sleeves, and inner tie rods, center link, and an idler arm, that is what the price comes out to be.

I have a 88 FORMULA 350 and had the front wheels rub at full lock on the inner liners. I found a tech bulletin back then that if this occurs; there is a factory liner replacement that goes behind the inner wheel well.Cured the problem.GM did not make the public aware of this; but if you persisted; they had the replacement. By the way; I bought the car new.

I could understand if both my front wheels rubbed, then I would have assumed it was some sort of factory mistake like what you're talking about but with mine it's only the front left and it only rubs at full lock to the left.

Are these other style liners still available?
