3rd gens and snow!!!

I just avoided a nightmare this past thursday. The New York area got hit with our first real snow storm of the season. As i was sliding past the job at 3 MPH i realized that i need a better snow tire than my AVS intermediates. I couldn't pull out of my parking space, it is dead flat and was surrounded by about 3-4 inches of snow. Luckily a coworker has a yukon denali XL ( not nessesary but fun as hell in the snow) . I ordered a set of firestone winterfire snow tires. I was wondering what experiences others had in the snow and what tires they use to cope???

Snow and my Formula= White knuckle grip

My cure? I always bought a winter beater.

One winter in that thing was enough!!!

I drove my car in the snow ONCE. on a pair of Z rated Toyo's.

it was an experiance... it wasn't TOO bad once i got rolling, it turned and stoped OK, but i couldn't get it moving from a dead stop at all.

My advice, buy a cheap front wheel drive, or stay home when it snows

I enjoyed driving sideways down the garden state parkway. But in other news, someone in a convertible Z or RS parked across the street yesterday, a good three days or so after the snowstorm. He tried leaving, but couldn't get away from the curb because of the 1/2" of snow/ice still sitting there underneath the drive wheel! He had two guys out there pushing it, too. Not that I enjoy the misfortune of other f-body drivers (he got out eventually), but it was certainly amusing. At least he knows he doesn't have a posi rear, now. hehehe

Dude, I got lucky moving down here. My wife and I wanted to move for a while, so we put our house up for sale to see what would happen. It sold in 6 days!!! When I told the boss, she offered to let me work in one of the manufacturing facilities we have down here.... I ain't complaining...

As for snow tires, sorry no help here, I spent several winters driving beaters and borrowing cars, cause my car DID get stuck on a snowball!!

neat, sounds cool, does help to have a house ot sell and able to relocate and have same Co. employment !

congrats and enjoy snowless place down there !

goal of relocating away from snow remains a goal to be met hopefully some time in this lifetime

wish i could find another full size van to get me through this winter like i had last winter, should have never sold that last van down in MO.

and about tires, i have best luck with all terrain tires, had some 31x10.5" with 8" truck rallies on a '77 electra 403 last year that was cool to have on it

good luck

Hmmm. Guess its just what you're used to.. I have better luck driving the formula when it snows than my old pickup.. Pickup wont even move out of the driveway. The bird will push snow with the air dam.. And when its really bad I have a set of old camaro rims with all 4 studded caps on em. Cheap tires but they get me to work and back.

When I was in Flagstaff, the posi helped out of the space, but the car slid around too easy, parked it and got a full time 4wd Jeep wagoneer. Which collects dust now that I'm back in Phoenix...not too much snow and ice here.

my mom is from Jersey, I ran off and joined the army 7 years ago and never looked back.
talked to her today and she asked how much snow we got here in VA and I said NONE, she was so pissed because they got 8 inches up there.
VA is still to cold for me I want to go farther south.

i put studded tires on the back of mine about three years ago, but that was when i had a 2.8, i dont think studs would make that much of a difference with my 383. buy a ghetto set of rims for like 40 bucks and get some snow tires, then when it gets nice outside, get out the impact wrench and put on your summer tires.

Looks like a bunch of non-driving bums in here

We got 7.5" snow down here and the roads were horrible. NY takes care of their roads due to higher winter weather budget unlike MD. I had NO PROBLEMS whatsoever. I even revved the engine and went a little sideways on purpose past the numerous SUV's in ditches on the side of the road. That's on 275/40r17 Kumho tires. I was shuttling co-workers home because their "superior" bad weather FWD's couldn't handle it.

Keep the speed down, lightly pump the brakes, never accelerate in turns, and speed up before the hills and coast up.

Keep in mind the car ran a best of 13.8@100, and it's got a flash happy torque converter

3rd gens are lethal in snow. I got caught out once.. never again

Your lucky if you can pull away on the flat. Shift into drive with your foot on the brake and the back wheels spin before you have released the brake due to increased braking on the front wheels.
The weight of the engine acts like an anchor at the front and the rear spins round it

Ive got two pails of sand, no posi and studded tires all the way around and I laugh at what I can go through. On flat ground Ive gone through 5" of standing snow, and have gotten up hills covered in sluch with no problem. Stopping is interesting, and once you get used to how it fishtails its easy to control. I go ice fishing a lot, and go on snow pack roads no problem. Mind you this is with my 2.8, not the t/a. The t/a is hard in the rain to drive, and will never see snow.

Ill second the NY road crews. i drove from syracuse to NW CT in a snowstorm a week and a half ago, and the roads were great until i got into CT from massachusetts. Like the second you cross, its awful. CT road crews suck.

I have to say, you really can't apriciate NYC snow removal until you drive in Long Island. Youd think for 3-5 times the property tax you might get some salt put down but no such luck. In NYC they are spreading salt as soon as the first flake hits, you can see them sitting on overpasses waiting. We also have a crap load of plows.

I mounted my winterfires today and just came back from my first drive, I am pleasantly surprised!! considering they are temporarily replacing avs intermediates, they ride well ( hell of a lot better than the Yokes) are pretty responsive, and stop pretty good, the most notable change is that they break way sooner than the yokes but when sliding they provide more grip than the yokes. I won't be winning any road races but i think i can deal with them for a few months. Its supposed to snow tommorrow, i'll give a report on how they feel after i log a few miles

Also helps to add some weight to the back end...i have 150 lbs of sandbags in the hatch over the rear wheels and have never had any problems (with snow tires also).

been driving the Winterfires for a couple of days now, the storm we were supposed to get monday never showed ( only because i'm 300 bucks poorer) I have to say, they are not performance tires but as a daily driver they are more pleasant than my AVS's. the only problem i have with them is that they vibrate under heavy braking, i think the VERY tall tread blocks are flexing and causing it. They do nice holeshots in the rain too!! I'm anxious for some snow to see just how good they are.
