Brake Line Question
Hey all
I have a few questions about brake lines. One of them broke on my RS and the other two look ready to split also. I'd like to replace them with steel lines, however, I'm looking to upgrade my brakes to 1LE front brakes and probably LS1 rear brakes next summer and would rather not purchase multiple sets of brake lines in a 6 month span.
1) Summit lists only 2 Earls kits for third gens: disk/drum, and 4 wheel disk. Do the 1LE calipers use the same brake lines? A part number I found here for Earls 1LE kit points to the 4 wheel disk kit at Summit.
2) Do the LS1 calipers use the same lines or fittings as the thirdgens? The tech article just mentioned reflaring the hard lines, not sure if it was then bolted to the caliper or to a new line. However I'd like to use a flex brake line to make pad changes easier.
3) Is there any difference between the Earls kits besides the 2 extra lines for the rear calipers in the 4 wheel disk kit? Could I buy the 4 wheel disk kit, use the front and middle lines on my disk/drum setup now, then use all 5 lines when I upgrade.
Sorry this is so long, but I am almost done installing my first phase of parts and would like to get the car back on the street while planning for phase 2.
Thanks
Ben

Did some searching today. Napa lists different part #s for 1le and non-1le front calipers, but the non-1le numbers are the same for 2 and 4 wheel disk. However, Autozone lists different part #s for front lines on 2 and 4 wheel disk cars, also no 1le option or designation. My guess is the fittings are the same and perhaps the 1le line is slightly longer. Can anyone verify?
Also, neither Napa or Autozone listed a fifth line for the 4 wheel disk cars, 1le or not. The fifth line in the Earls is the line going from the body to the differential correct? That should be the same between drum and disk rears right?
With the rear, I'm going to check my 97 brakes but without a set of J65 and LS1 brakes to compare I can't confirm a third gen 4 wheel disk kit will fit. Unless someone knows if PBR calipers tend to have the same fittings, since all 3 are PBR's I believe.
I'm just thinking out loud as I do this in case someone else might have similar problems or someone sees something I miss.
Thanks

I bought the Earls kit (5 Piece) for the 4 wheel disc cars and all of the lines fit my 1LE brakes. Even if you have a stock brake system the Earls lines help out a lot. The best thing I did was replace the rear center piece that came with the kit because unknowenly to me my E brake cable was rubbing thru the stock rubber line. I believe the kit will fit both the 1LE and non 1LE calipers.
