SFC's don't fit.... :(
SFC's don't fit.... :(
I recently purchased the Competition Engineering Weld-in style SFC's. I have taken my car and the SFC's to my mechanic twice trying to find out how these pieces go in. At first we followed the instructions and found out that the floor pan would have to be cut up and some other major modifications to the floor board. So we scrapped the idea because it would be too much in labor. Then we tried to see if we could make them fit just like I had seen on other cars, out towards the sill on the door, then run back and bolt up near the LCA relocators. Then weld along under the door sill or w/e. But when we go to the passenger side we experienced another problem, the floor pan would have to be cut up again on that side to make the SFC fit flush up to the floor to be welded properly. So the question I have is, did I get the wrong SFC's? Because these won't work without either cutting up the floor pan, or cutting up the SFC's which means I could have just had some better ones made for the same price. I am really getting frusterated with this because I want to get these pieces in and see what they are all about. Or should I find a new mechanic to put these in? He said he could make some for me for around $500 dollars, but I REALLY wasn't looking to spend that much on SFC's, because I purchased them for $170 and was hoping to spend around $100 bucks to get these welded in. Should I look at other brands of SFC's? Should I try and send these back for some new ones because these might be the wrong ones? Or should I find a new mechanic that would know how to put these pieces in? I am supposed to go back to his shop today to see what I could find out. So if someone could please reply that has these SFC's or has had experience with these and tell me what they did to get them in, and better yet, if they have pictures of them installed or uninstalled so that I can see if these are the right pieces, or if my mechanic just doesn't know what he is doing.
Thanks, Youngin

I have the weld in Competition Engineering ones and I had a guy that does roll cages etc put them on. He makes a few changes to them so you don't have to bend up the floor pan.

Return them and get your money back.
As xpndbl3 said go buy spohn subframes and you don't have to cut up you floorboards. Southside machine are good also and you can order through summit.
It isn't your mechanics fault you bought the wrong brand. Why would you want to buy frame connectors and then have to modify them to make them work?

I think that their weld in ones do require modification, but I have heard of people just buying their bolt in ones and welding them in and those fitting fine. If you can return them you could try one of the brands that is supposed to fit well.

Thanks for all your replys, I guess I got kinda confused on one of my previous posts that modifications were not necessary. But I guess you either have to hack up the floor or hack up the SFC's and I would not like to do either as they are both time consuming and will end up costing me more money in the end. I am either going to order Spohn's tubular SFC's or the SSM ones. Does anyone know how much shipping would cost for the Spohn ones? As I live in Canada. Thanks a bunch for all your replys it helped out alot and probably saved me some time and lots of money.

I ran into the same problem today with my comp eng. weld in style.
it's prob too late now, but if you replace them with the bolt in ones and just weld them in it would be fine. (a friend with a 86 TA has them, and they are shaped differently)
I am not going to cut up my floor pan....
BTW I got mine at summit in dec for around $85.
