SFC's, Powdercoated or not??
I'm planning on ordering a set of Spohn subframes tonight, but cannot decide on geting them powdercoated or not. I would like the protection, but can't see spending the $$ just to gring 1/2 of it off. Any recomendations on another way to protect them without buying them coated?

POR-15 or some type of undercoating. That POR-15 stuff leaves a ceramic like finish I believe that you can easily paint. That's the route Im going at least.
im doin por 15 also..regardless of the fact they have to strip powercoating off where they weld the sfc's in.... unless u got a thing for paying extra bucks for powercoating por 15 works just as well....

You can certainly go bare and put coating on afterwards. Not sure if you could get the coating all the way around the sfc's once they are up.
btw - you certainly won't take 50% of the powdercoating off. Just a bit at each weld...
I did that and then just used some touch up paint on the welds once we were done. The powdercoat is on there nice and thick. I guess I just wanted a cleaner look under the car but admittedly there are not that many people who will see it
Here is a pic after the install but before the touch up...
Have fun. You should enjoy this mod.

i second shultzy here, i had mine powdercoated (the old square tube style) and have no regrets, the amout of coating taken off is very small, and it looks and has lasted (3 years now) great!

Whoops, forgot...
i got Hotchkis SFC and dont even know where to start grinding off the powder coat................how bare does it have to be? all the way down to metal on both side? Do I also have to grind any part of the car? I guess I can always jack the car up and put it on jack stands , test fit the Subs and see where they meet metal of the car and grind that part off....and on the car,,,huh, right?

DR G, to correctly apply POR-15, you have to prep the metal with an etching solution so if you go the powdercoated route, I suggest regular "touch up" paint so you won't have to do this. You could always just paint the welds with regular paint and then coat the whole area with some of that thick black undercoating stuff, that'll keep it from rusting.
89IRO, I'd still use some pretty stout stuff down there. I know I wouldn't want to have to do it twice.

I bought the Spohns, bare, and painted them after. Can't think of what I used, but I know it was a Rustoleum automotive product, brushed on, and about as thick as tar.

That POR-15 looks like the same stuff I used. I just used the Rustoleum brand version cause that's what we had in the shop. Same stuff though, I'm sure. Just don't get it on anything you don't want it on...its nasty stuff to try and get off once its dry!
dont matter about taking off 50 % of the powdercoating... its 45 bux extra from spohn i believe.... por 15 run u like 20-30 depending on where u get it and the size, u prep the sfc, paint or spray the 15 over them, let dry, grind off what u need to and then por 15 the welds.... i believe u can also paint it... and listen por 15 is anti rust prevention... if there is rust under por 15... it will eventualy eat thru the 15.... make sure u do it right the first time.... its just a matter of saving a few bucks.... if u dont care or have money to blow... powder coat them.... for me from a techical and economical standpoint... por 15 is the better choice.... besides ur not gonna use all of the 15 on the sfc's maybe half to a quarter so u will have leftover for other ****.
