Steering gear boxes: Which models came with close ratio?
I am pretty sure that most GTA's and IROC's came with close ratio ones, but there must be some Trans Ams and Z-28's that came with them too, Right?
How can I tell? I just pulled one out of an 86' Trans Am the other day because it was in the best shape out of the others in the yard. I pulled a wonderbar off of an Iroc and I was sure that it had the close ratio box, but it was leakin'. There was an 87' GTA too but the gear box was really dirty and didn't look like it had much life left.
Are there casting #'s on these things?

Most likely it doesn't. My 85 T/A didn't have it. You can tell, trust me. The steering requires ~double the force to turn and the car will dart from lane to lane. Do you have 16" wheels? That seems to be one of the determining factors.
As far as the swap goes... It isn't that hard, depending on the condition of the bolts and hoses. If they are rusted to hell, you will have a hard time. Generally it isn't too hard though.

Well,
The car I pulled it off of didn't have any WS-6 emblems as far as I remember, but it did have 16 inch wheels. In 1986, what wheels came with the WS-6 package?

My Formula came with the deep dish 16" rims. T/A's came with a convex 16" rim I believe.
The only WS6 emblems my car had were on the rims. You can also measure the sway bars. If it is huge up front, chances are its' a WS6. There is also the tried and true RPO code to look for.
There is a way to tell if you have the box in your hand. Count the number of turns it takes to go from lock to lock. I think there is a Z stamped on the quick ratio also.

a Z huh???
Can anyone verify what he is saying? I can't just go back and check the car to measure the sway bar and check the rpo, chances are it's gone by now.
The box does have a Z on it though. How many turns is the quick ratio? 2 or 2.5 lock to lock?

You want to be sure about a fast ratio box
find a IROC at a salvage yard and take that one.
Who knows what model they came on with the Firebirds???? It could be a guessing game as these Posts are stating.
