Have you done a search for the recall kit? You probably need to do it to get those '88 calipers to work. Or you could switch over to the '89 and up PBR/1LE style and be done with it.

My 89 rear emergency brake doesn't work at all.
The levers actually extend on their full range of motion. When they are all the way over, the pushrod is barely pushing on the pads...

Hmm...

I have a 83 car with about a 91 or 92 rear in it. Should be the same brakes as your 89, the PBRs.The parking brake (these cars don't have an "emergency" brake, whatever that would consist of, only a parking one) works just fine. No problems. It will hold the car, even facing uphill, on a fairly steep incline. The adjustment is not too far from the mid-point of the threaded area, which looks fairly nominal to me.

Are you sure your calipers are working correctly? Everything slides on everything else like it's supposed to?

Pad wear is normal and even back there - on both sides.
At first glance, it looks like my 'pushrods' on the calipers are too short.

I'm gonna try fabbing up somethin a little longer..

Interesting...I once had a set of calipers from a '93 or '94 car and I swear the pushrods are a bit longer than the ones in the '89 calipers. Or maybe those were from a 'Vette, I can't remember. Maybe there's a slight difference in them??

Steve, can you measure the pushrod and post what you get?

wow old thread

I have this same issue with my rear brakes i have adjusted the e brakes till im blue and they wont grab enough rotor to keep the car from rolling. being i have a stick i think i need to have this working. i thought that the calipers on 9 bolts would eventually ratchet themselves tight on the rotor? its tough to pull lever now, i didnt have this problem with my 10 bolt.

it will never go away, Its just a faulty design. I had brand new cables and no matter how hard you pull on the lever it doesn't work that great, I had mine to the point where it would hold on a slight incline but i always put it in gear just to be safe. as long as the brake holds it a little it will keep the strain off the trans and you will be ok. The drums on the 10-bolt that i have feel like racing brakes compared to the 9-bolt disc, and the e-brake will lock up the wheels.
