So I bought an 84 Z28 yesterday. I noticed a leak coming from the right front brake hose. There was a rip, so i replaced it. Once everthing was back together i tried to bleed the right front brake and was unable to due to the bleeder being stripped out. So now I tried to test the brakes anyway and the brake light is on and the brake pedal goes to the floor with no resistance. The resivoir has plenty of fluid. However, before i replaced the hose there was alot of gunk in the resivoir. I Drained the resivoir untill there was only fluid remaining in the holes of the resivoir. I cleaned out the mess of gunk in the resivoir and filled it back up with brake fluid. So now my brakes still don't work and I can't bleed them. I'm going to try to bleed them again tomorrow. Is my problem from not being able to bleed the brakes or is it elsewhere. Thanks

If your bleeder screw is stripped, rather than try to fix it it may be easier to replace the caliper. I've heard thet go for about $12.

If you got air in the master, it will have to be bled.

Your car being an 84 you may as well replace the other rubber brake hoses too, just to be safe.

It'd also might be a good idea to flush the system with new brake fluid.

 

I have an 84 z-28. I followed your tech article (good article) and replaced my 700R4 trnsmission with a borg warner t-5. In doing so, I had to remove the master cylinder and booster. When I replaced them the brakes were soft and wouldn't grab. Since the brakes were old. I replaced them all and the master cyliner. THe first time I tried to bleed the whole system from the wheels, and that may have been a problem. This time I bled the master cylinder, but instead of beeding it on a vice, I bled it in the car. Now the petal is relatively stiff, but the brakes grab, and pull.

Should I reblead the master cylinder on the vice ?
should I also replace the (What do they call that valve below the MC)?
Should I bleed the above mentioned valve,
Should I look at the adjusters and other paraphanalia in the rear brake assemblies to make sure they are all aligned correctly?

Or something else?

To trbodon21, sounds like you have a lot of air in the system. You have to bleed your brakes, so keep trying on the stripped bleeder valve. With a rip being on the brake line it allowed air to get into your system. Also by you draining out the master cylinder I don't know if you got air into that as well. If you did then that will have to be bled.
