popping/clunking noise when turning

sometimes when i turn my wheels sharp, but not all the way to the end, but sharp, and i start to accelerate even slowly, i get like a "clunk"/"thump" noise. it only happens once during the turn, it's pretty loud too. an example of when it might happen is when i'm backing out of a parking spot, and when i put the car back in Drive and turn the wheel and let go of the brake and start to accelerate, it makes that noise...what can that be?
