Steering Brace Dimentions?
Hey guys,
I'm going to be making myself a custom steering brace for my '83 Z28. I plan to use some square tube-steel that is probably 1/8" thick per side.
My question is... where do I weld on the mounting brackets for this? I know they go between the sway bar mounts and the body, correct? So i just need to know were on the bar they should be welded.
Also... will I get any noticeable handling improvement by doing this?
Thanks.

The brackets are usually installed almost or flush with the ends of the tubing.
You'll need 2 bolt holes on each flange and a center slot (the sway bar mount has a tab that goes in it). You could do away with the center slot and just go solid but you would have to cut the tabs off the mounts (my BMR was set up that way).
You should notice a big difference. I rate this right up there with SFCs. I even had ws6 package, 50 series 16inch rims, sfcs, lcas, and brackets and I still noticed a big increase in cornering and just pure responsiveness.

Ok thanks.. I can do the brackets no problem. What I needed to know was the actual distance between the 2 swaybar mounts. Sorry if it was kinda unclear

I'm unsure as to why you don't just climb under your car and measure it yourself (I'm usually missing something), but if you can wait until after I get off vacation, (next week) I'll send you the measurements. I've got two stock steering braces getting professionally painted as I write this. I'll pick them up when I get home and measure them for you. The problem I forsee with giving you the dimensions is that there are slight variations between cars. That is why Steve Spohn makes an adjustable version and the stock steering braces have elongated holes on one side. Good luck and shoot me an email if you still need help next week.

Thanks FormulaRoth... I'd like to just climb under and measure it, but I can't find my measureing tape anywere. Its also got about 6" of snow in front of it and is about -30* right now
Plus, I cant really measure hole-to-hole accurately with the measureing tape. Its pretty hard to do accurately (for me anyway). I tried the same thing in the summer measureing something else, but dont remember what.
I just ask because I wanted to get the most accurate answer, and I thought someone here might have a steering brace or something handy they could measure or me.
I could climb under and measure it if i had the measureing tape, lol, but like the rest of my tools, its never around when I need it.

Make the brackets first,
Bolt them to the car,
Now with the brackets in position, cut and tack weld the cross bar to the brackets,
remove bar and bracket assembly and do final welding.
Now was that hard to figure out?

That sounds like a great idea though
