drum to disc.

ok...as of now i have a 91 rs with the stock rear with drums.

i found a rear with discs, eaton posi trac, and 3.73 for 500.

what all is needed to convert from Drum to Disc. Is it *hard* or fairly simple.

AND is 500 a good price for this? i wasnt expecting to pay more than 300 for a posi 3.73 rear end....

500 sounds a little steep to me The conversion is pretty easy BUT besides just swapping the rear end with the discs on it, you have to swap the combination valve right below the master cylinder because there is a difference between the two. Also I'm not sure but you might need to change the parking brake cables but I am not sure on that.

I believe you will need the e-brake cable, master cylinder and proportioning valve from the car with discs to convert from drum to disc. Someone will correct it if I am wrong...

The only thing different between the 9 bolt and 10 bolt disc rears is the backing plates that the calipers mount up to. You could router out the holes on the 9 bolt plates to fit your 10 bolt, but 10 bolt backing plates are so common, I'd just pick up a used set of them somewhere. If your 10 bolt is a drum setup, you also have to modify the axle flange a little bit where the backing plate bolts up. I've seen a tech post on here somewhere on how to modify that. Basically you have to cut off the top portion of the mounting flange and drill two more holes in it to mount the disc backing plate. To 89RS: The S10's did use a locker, or Gov-Loc unit, which I've heard breaks quite easily and isn't very reliable. You'd be better off running a rebuildable eaton posi unit instead.

ew s10's came with lockers?? im trying to avoid having to tear into the differential all togather...

i have a slp posi that SHOULD of been here by now....and i have my 3.73s on my desk as we speak....IF i can find a rear end for 300 - 400 ill sell the gears and posi for something like 200....

OEM GM gears...used, but in great condition....

i may just swap out the gears in the rear end i have, i have been looking for awhile for a 3.73 rear and they are hard to come by

500 is seriously steep, i was hoping to jew him down to 400....cause 400 is all i got.....

Question, IF i do swap in the gears myself, should i get the mastyer install kit and put all new bearings in or should i cheap out and pay 34 dollars and get the simple install kit....

Actually the Master Cylinder that he has on his car for disc/drum will be fine for the disc rear he is gonna put in. But he will need the proportioning valve from the disc/disc car that he is getting is rear out of.
Thanks for clarifying that for me Josh. I knew I had part of it right. I have not gotten to my rear yet as I am still working on the motor aspect of my project but I will be switching over to disc as well.
