strut replacement

What's the best way to break loose the lower mounting bolts.Do you have to remove the hub and use air tools? I hate bringing my car to the garage, but I don't have a compressor yet
thanx

i had to remove the rotor and use an impact, only took me 30 min aside, and you can check on your wheel bearings while you are at it.

i left the rotor on..

did it all with handtools.... i donno what vic_V8 was doing in the mean time, but at a hurried pace with all the tools laid out, it took me about 20mins per side... (i was in a rush for a event that night)

my car is a 100% southern car without a speck of rust, so the nuts broke loose with a breaker bar without issue... just stick the jack under the a arm, and break em loose. i didnt need a impact at all..

i had the shocks and struts done in about a hour, all with hand tools in the driveway, however like i said, i didnt have any problems because i have a southern car... your miliage may vari.

vic_V8 : heh, re-reading that, i came off a lil rude... what i was trying to say was, with air tools, it shouldnt take very long at all.

once the wheels were off, you can zip all 4 nuts off in about 2 mins.

Unfortunately I have a N.H. car with 120,000 mi.It has never been driven in winter but there is a lot of rusty parts underneath. The struts look like the originals.I've tried a breaker bar on the top lower mounting bolt but no go.I haven't tried a breaker bar and a pipe yet.I'm thinking I'm going to need a compressor in the future to paint so I may go get one today. How big a tank do I need and how many psi to run impacts & spray gun

I soaked mine for a couple of days with WD-40, then used a breaker bar (I can't recall if it was 18 or 24 inches). Bolts came off without difficulity.

this is one of thoes cases where bigger really is better.
if you're planning on spraying anything id go with nothing lower then 20gal... athough with the price diff between the two, id probly buy a 35gal.

with the tiny UFO shaped 5gal one, you can probly get two of thoes bolts out before the compressor kicks in... but then you have to wait until it fills again before you can get the other 2.... better then nothing, but not worth the money IMO.
