3rd Gen to C5 Brake Conversion
Hey Guys,
I've finally decided to get going on my brake upgrade. I had settled on the LS1 conversion but decided to go ahead and do the C5 upgrade instead. I remember there being a thread that had all the details in it. In searching for it, I see that it mysteriously disappeared.
Anyway, I have a couple questions. First, is there a drawing floating around with the measurements of the special bracket? Second, I seem to remember something about 12.75" rotors and 13" rotors for the C5. Am I off base here or can I use either one? And finally, is the C5 upgrade feasible on the rear with a 9bolt and disc brakes?
Thanks in advance...

What do you want to know? I did that conversion and posted some pics a few weeks ago. If you search you should find it. As for the brackets, PM me. As for the rotors, I am using 13" rotors, measured them, from Wagner. $60 a piece, no slots or drills. And for pads I am using GM 'vette pads. I figure this set up will work great for baseline tests. ONce I am happy that everything is working correctly, I will play with rotors and pads.
If you have any questions, PM me or post them here.
As for the rears, I don't know. When I get that far, I am going to look for a complete 4th Gen rear at the swap meets or boneyard...

Well, you answered the question about the rotors, thanks. I found the info about upgrading the rears. Basically, I can do the LS1 swap on the rear and use the C5 rear caliper in place of the LS1 rear caliper. The only thing that's left is finding dimensions of the bracket! My spindles and hubs are ready...

From what I can tell the C5 and LS1 rear caliper are the same.

Thats what it looks like to me too. Obviously, the vette is very different with the caliper mounting because of the IRS.

Prepped spindles and hubs. I've been working on a pattern for the bracket in autocad. I have imported the drawing into photoshop so that it can be printed out to scale. As soon as I have the dimensions for the bolt holes, I'll post both the autocad file and a scaled .jpg that can be used as an accurate pattern. Just waiting on the calipers to show up...

From what I can see in that pic, nice work by the way!, you may need to notch the spindle some on the part nearest where the strut bolts to it. I found this to be the case with the brackets I bought, so you will probably need to do the same. However, just wait till you make up your bracket and see what needs to be done. Good job!!

Thanks for the heads-up! Are you talking about the area circled in the picture? If so, I'm hoping to alleviate any problems there with the design of the bracket. I'm using 3/4" stock that I'm going to mill down to 5/8". I'm almost tempted to take the cad file I generated down to one of the local machine shops and have them plug it into their cnc machine... but what would be the fun in that? I picked up 12 3/4" rotors today for $22 each at NAPA. Relatively happy about that. I marred my hubs a little trying to get the old races out. They were a total pita. Anyway, I'm still moving along. Thanks again for the guidence...

Yep, somewhere in the area of the of where the circles are I had to notch a bit. I am sure with some cleaver designing, you may be able eliminate that contingency. Keep up the good work and keep the pics comin!
