Front Brake Kit options?
Front Brake Kit options?
Hey Guys,
I am looking at what options I have to upgrade the front brakes on my TTA. I plan to start doing open track days and the stock brakes will not be up to the task of slowing the car down lap after lap.
I am not sure what is available.. I know there are LS1 swaps but those brakes are maginal for track use.
What else is out there and how much $$$?
I know Baer makes a few kits but is there any good budget ($1500?) type kits out there?
Thanks

C4, C5, 1LE, etc. You might try a search. There are many options.

Your TTA should already have 1LE so it's really simple. GOOD rotors and pads. Should be plenty to keep up with any track. My 10.5" stockers kept up with a pretty severe track out here, so with good pads & rotors, you should be fine. If you aren't, there is either something wrong with your brakes (probably need a rebuild) or you are on them too much. After all, you can't step into victory lane with one foot on the brakes.

some high quality rotors... they make a big diff when you start putting real heat into the brakes..
also, take off the back dust shield if your car has one... lets a lil more air go over the rotors...
some ducting into the center of the rotor helps too...
make sure you have some fresh fluid in there, put some good pads in, and you should be set.

Yeah it does have 1LE's. I think they suck, but the they have 100K miles on them so the calipers probably do need a rebuild. I figured instead of spending the money for all new calipers I could probably get something better for a little more money.
That, and I can't stand the fact that it doesnt have floating rotors... I hate talking apart the wheel bearings to change rotors and race pads will eat through rotors. I'm also not trying to stop a 250hp car, my car makes double that and will be going pretty fast out there.
I saw Spohn had a wilwood kit for 1500 and change. It looks similar to what I put on the front of my Lightning. 2 piece rotors really pull the heat out of the brakes. Ducting sucks, I don't want to do that and with the intercooler shroud it's already tight under there.
The brakes on my LS1 Trans-am sucked... I wouldn't want those on my TTA.
The spohn kit is in the price range I am looking for and the performance of brakes I am looking for. I don't suppose they fit 16 inch GTA wheels?

The biggest brakes I know that you can fit under the crosslace rims are the 12" LS1s, and you still need a spacer between the wheel and rotor to get them to clear without scraping the back of the mesh of the wheel.
I'm really suprised your 1LEs are bad...mine are great and I've had no problems with them for the 2 years they've been on. You are pretty much limiting yourself to a 12" system with those wheels. You're looking at the 1LEs, the 12" C4s, and the LS1s. All other kits are too big to fit under those wheels. If you want to get rid of having to mess with the bearings, the C4s or LS1s are about your only option.
If you want to ditch those 1LEs, let me know...I'd be interested.

When is someone going to fabricate a set-up with perhaps 12 or 12.5inch rotors and 4piston calipers that fit under these wheels and make themselves a whole load of cash! Ed? Dan? Anybody?

What about Power Slot Rotors??? They are slotted and are only $220 for front L and R. Combine those with some good pads and you should be set. I'm thinking of getting those rotors... but then again I'm working on a street setup (so those might be too tame for you). But at least those rotors will fit under my 16s. Wait power slots will fit under 16 inch gta wheels right?

Since power slot rotors are just slotted replacement rotors, they should fit just fine. Actually, it's not the rotors you have the issues with, it's the calipers on the other brake set-ups digging into the wheel.

Hey Mike,
With your deep pockets, maybe customization is the way to go. Just one example. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...37#post1908137

I will probably end up moving to 17inch Wheels since the choice for Race rubber is better.
I am considering the wilwood kit that spoon is selling. That looks like a pretty good deal for 1500 bucks.

Too bad the rotors aren't two piece but at least it converts over to floating rotors.
I gotta sell my Turbobuick so I can get this thing hooked up with some fun suspension stuff.

I would definitely upgrade your pads and also get the Baer Eradispeed rotors - you will warp stock-style rotors in 1 session, that's the breaks.
