Why are my front wheels so far back?

Like the title says, my fender liners have been worn totally through on the drivers side from the outside part of the tire rubbing when turning hard to the left. I would really like to be able to turn the car without it making a horrible sound, as it is pretty embarrassing. The passenger side one just barely touches as well (turning right), but not as bad as the drivers side. Why would the wheel be so far back? There isn't any way to adjust it, is there?

I say worn parts unless its been in a wreck. Check your bushings and ball joints.

The only wreck it has ever been it was it got rear ended at a stop sign. I replaced the ball joints a year ago and the bushings are poly, so I don't think that is the problem.

I read on another post that GM came out with new fender liners that connected to the inside of the sheet metal, not the outside like they are now. This would probably stop the rubbing. Anybody know if this is true, and where I can get them?

This may sound stupid,I don't know if it would have any affect but do you have the right wheels on the front, backspacing wise?

Yes, I have the front wheels on the front and rear wheels on the rear, with 245/50/16 tires.

I have the same problem... it all started after i tried to do a donut one night..

I would imagine a front end rebuild will fix it ...which is coming next.

Doesn't a front end rebuilt just deal with steering?

When all the bushings are worn out it can cause this.

your bushings would have to be completly shot for it to make it do this .....

do you hear any other noises in the front end ??

Mine did that b4 i replaced them and there was still rubber there when you make a tight turn there is alot of force trying to push that wheel back. If it is like that with the wheel strait then i dunno what is it have to be somethin bent.

No, it's just when turning hard, but I still want to be able to make U-turns without having to make it a 3 point turn. I havn't heard any noises coming from the front end. It seems to me like the rubbing would stop if the liner was moved to behind the fender lip. Someone said there was a new fender liner GM made that did this because people were complaining about rubbing. Anyone know about this? It might be TSB 90-10-19 if that helps.

Car: too many ...
Block up the rear, jack the front up, visually check the steering linkage and tie rod ends. Focus your attention on the number of threads visable on the tie rod ends (compare both sides). My car has weird steering issues because the tie rod ends and adjusters are jacked up. It looks like whoever aligned it did a ghetto tie rod adjustment to bring it back to spec, one side has almost twice as many threads visable! Also, with the car firmly supported grab the wheel with both hands and pull away from the fender, if it moves around then the ball joint is bad.
