pop when turning
When i first accelerate and am turning slowly to the left there is a loud pop that i can feel under the floorboard, not sure if it happens when turning right also..it is right underneath and i can feel it by the pedals...i thought it might be the sway bar end link but i have recently replaced them and checked them..no problems.. any suggestions??

If the frame isn't cracked , check the K member bolts. Mine were at like 25 ft.lbs , and it popped loud when I turned. After I tightened them to spec. No more noise.

I'd recommend a Haynes manual from the local bookstore if you're really dead-set against having a shop work on it.

Please don't take offence but......
Steering gear box:
A. What is the box that the the big rod from the steering wheel goes in to, is bolted to the front sub frame and has a small arm (called a pitman arm) sticking out of it that moves the front tires left and right, Alex
B. What is that car a hot girl is riding in that causes you to turn your head and your steering wheel when you see her
C. What is that big box in the middle of the road that fell off the truck in front of you you have to steer around
Greasing 101:
1 get a grease gun
2 fill the grease gun and don't let the entire tube shoot out before you have the gun back together
3 get car up in air in sutch a way it will not fall on you
4 attach gun to zerk fitting
5 pump untill you see clean grease coming out
6 remove gun
7 clean up mess
8 repete for remaning 8 (total of nine) grease zerks on your car
9 two days later get under car again and wipe up the mess again
sorry for being a smart axx
(ps you might find a post on here (suspension board) explaining why I have a broken foot right now)

Hi guys!
I wonder if you can help a Limey with a Firebird? Yes, I'm from across the pond in good old Blighty. Anyway, I read with interest about the possible cracks in the chassis next to the steering box. My 1985 Firebird (dunno which type - 5.0 litre motor) had this problem which I only discovered after buying her. My local garage plated and welded the chassis, so hopefully it's fine now. No wonder she was all over the road - I thought it was just down to soft suspension and recirculating ball ? steering! Is this cracking a common problem with the F-bodies?
Now that I've also replaced the rubber disk in the flexible steering column joint next to the steering box I should be able to get the wheel alignment checked and adjusted if needs be.
Be seeing you. Hopefully we can cope with any language differences (hood=bonnet, trunk=boot etc.)
Cheers,
Mark.

Howdy! I travel on business in the High Wycombe and Saunderton areas occasionally, hope some time we can meet up for a beer...third-genners in the UK are a rarity!
Unfortunately, the cracking you found is fairly common. Good preventative step would be a brace similar to the GM "wonderbar" they equipped the IROCs with, available from several of the sponsors here.
My personal favorite is the one sold by Top Down Solutions http://www.top-downsolutions.com/ and I've seen the Spohn.net one appearing good also. The TDS one bolted right in, clears my fan shroud and 36mm swaybar easily, and is much larger/beefier material than the original GM piece which I'd bent at Lime Rock Park previously.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the info. I'd actually had a surf around the TDS site after posting and spotted their bar (downloaded their instructions for it too
)
The beer sounds a great idea, though my missus may disagree with me travelling all that way. High Wycombe is a fair distance from Chipping, Lancashire and us Brits aren't used to driving the same distances. Hehe.
You never know though...
Cheers,
Mark.

hi, my car dont have the triangular brace that stiff the steering box area.Maybe that's why it's craked.I found some very cheap at the junkyeard.I don't know what year it came stock...or if the original one's fell of.I doubt it,but the holes are there,i just tap the tread.
Does anyone have some info about that,i would be nice!
