KYB GR2 shocks/struts

What is your take when you mix a stock 91' Firebird suspension and these shocks. Are they an improvement over OEM style Monroe shocks?

They are very cost effective for my sit, so its either those or stockers for me.

Had good luck with them, not the best not the worst. Good bang for buck.

Have had them on my car for almost 2 years. Fronts are still fine. Right rear has just blown, but this car has an issue with blowing rear shocks

Put all new KYB GR2 on my 88. Also put all new springs on them....HOWEVER, I now have a stinking squeak that I can't find.

Took right rear shock loose from the axle...didn't seem to have the squeak anymore....

Thought maybe the top was too tight so i loosened it a bit, put bottom back on and pushed on it....no squeak.

Took it to drive it and dang thing started squeaking AGAIN.

Anyone have any ideas what could be squeaking????

WOuld use a torque wrench on the top of the shocks, but need to hold the strut rod to keep it from spinning while tightening or loosening the top bolt.....

DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!!!!!!

I have a similar kind of squeaking, though at first I thought it was coming from the door latch or something. Now I'm thinking it's the rubber bushings on the top of the passenger rear shock, as I've heard that other people have had similar noises from them. I first noticed it after getting my sfc's welded in, presumably because the supension has to work more now. It also seems to be relative to humidity, as it gets worse after a good rain. I'm going to try putting some grease between the rubber and metal to see if it helps any.

BTW I'm running sportlines with Koni yellows.

Just put new KYB GR2 on all four corners of my 86 T/A. They'll be coming off as soon as I get replacements. My car rides like it's got marshmallows for shocks. Stock Monroes were better!!

If your springs are shot shocks won't help much or last very long.

My gr2's work great(rear only). I'll second(or third...whatever) the squeaking though. I was thinkin it was my poly panhard bushings, cause yes, it's worse when it rains. But then again, now that u mention it, it may be the shocks. hmmm...

FIXED the squeak last night.

Took both rear springs off, greased the rubber and put them back on ...the right way.

Seems that the squeaking side had the larger offset on the rubber towards the body instead of the smaller side.

NO MORE squeak

KYB-236001 - front

KYB-343211 - rear

I believe these are the correct summitracing.com part numbers

As I found out the hard way, shocks and springs should really be matched. There is no way those shocks would be worse than the monroe's ( I have also had both) if you have the right (or just not worn perhaps) springs on the car..

I swapped to eibach proline springs initially, and the car was jarring to ride in -- the shocks just could not react fast enough to dampen the motion in the springs. I had read that the KYB GR-2's were a good match for these springs, and they were dead on. A huge improvement, and better handling than any other third gen I have driven.

Anyhway, to the poster -- if do get them (and they are a great deal), and you are not happy with the ride, look into the eibach prolines (1" drop).
