the consideration


88 gta

400 destroked to a 377
large mouth vortecs
mighty daemon 850 w annular boosters
650 tork

t56 w 2 overdrives

strange 10bolt out back w/ eaton- or auburn prob 408's

w 4 link and channeled uni body for frame rails box tubing 2x3
here is the odd part

dana 40 up front

probably use mustang 2 highly modified

18" or 17" X 11" w 335 35 17 or 18's

the question is this

how sacrilegious is this and how do you think it would work say later turbo'd w/ approx 1500 lb's of tork

i understand the biggest prob would be braking stuff
the biggest being the t56 so possibly a richmond

but the car would utilize a full 12 point roll cage and the full frame rails it is basically what i would do to a vette

but i do have the gta so, what are your thoughts on building

Can I have some of the money you plan on spending? Do a search for the all wheel drive Astro van thread. It's been discused many times. Unless you have more money than the car's worth, it's not an acceptable project.

If it was ever done, it would be very unique but it's not cost effective to try and fabricate such a car from a third gen.

on the cost

i think that channeling the unibody will be reativly easy the bigest expese and headace - as in fabrication- will be the front wheel drive equip

additionally the carr will be intended for road race and autocross

dale you know my love is road race and "corrners" but still the reason is drag ie all wheel drive equip, i know the syclone had amazing 60 ft times but vetts do to and if i wanted to drag the front drive-shaft could be pulled and 4 link dial in changed

Your going to need a transfer case or something. Or atleast a complete AWD setup form something. They never did make 4x4 or AWD with a T56.

I'd start with a complete AWD setup, but thats still gonna be a job.

You could always just use a Chevy SS AWD pickup chassis with the 6.0l LSX motor and just swap on a camaro body.

I don't remember Boyd doing that. I know that Troy T. (Rad Rides) built something like that called Quadradeuce.

I think it is doable with the cage and the full frame. Lots of fab work though.

And put that Quadraduce up against me Camaro in Autocross or a road course and I'll eat him for lunch.

Save your money and don't waste your time, 3rd gens handle extremely well if you just buy the correct aftermarket parts and learn how to setup the car properly.

But the Quadradeuce wasn't exactly built for all out handling.
If memory serves me correctly, it snaps it's 0-60 time in 2.9 seconds. I had a chance to talk to Troy T. and his cars are all about ridiculous amounts of power. Look at the Chicayne.

Dean, have you ever ran against some of the newer awd cars at the track? (Evo, STi, etc.) I'm interested to see your take on them although you probably waxed them from skill alone.

yup, what dean said.


the only place a AWD camaro is going to have a advantage would be on snow. or other loose pack dynamic surface (sand, ect)


as far as drag racing goes, your 60' limitation really is how much power you make.. sure AWD cars 60' better out of the box, but RWD cars go alot lower... and its not hard on parts like halfshafts


as far as autoX goes, its like the drag launches.... its better then alot of RWD stock cars, but mod a RWD car, and poof, better then a 4wd..... thoes front tires only have so much traction.. its better to use them for turning then for power

Interestingly enough, the STi is killing the f-cars, in both ESP and SM in the nation pro-solo tour. The national level ESP camaro's, can't touch the rally cars.

Only because Evo's and STi's are narrower and shorter than the 3rdgens.

Its the laws of physics. We have to run the same course with higher slip angles than the smaller cars. It is an unfair adbvatage they have right off the bat. The angle of attack we have to take, the weight difference also on that high tire slip angle heats us up more (thus faster overheat on street tires), and more polar weight kill us in transistioning compared to an Evo. Here's a sketch showing the difference in our foward momentum and our lateral movement compared to the smaller more agile cars.

Get me on a road course where wee are both braking hard from a high speed straight into a hard corner and I'll eat an Evo for lunch just like I did with this M3 BMW.
