Widen IROC wheels ??

I've been looking at the aftermarket IROC wheels in 18" and think they are the best looking wheels on the camaros. Unfortunately they are only 8" wide.

The only option is ZR1 wheels in 17x9.5 or 17x11 but then you have to run the spacer and I dont' think they look as good as the IROC wheels.

I would like to get 18" wheels and send them out to be widened. Has anyone done this before? I haven't looked into how much they can be widened without rubbing but I'd like to hear some feedback whether anyone has done before, how wide can you go, or any pros/cons.

Thanks!

I know they can widen steel wheels but I'm not sure they can do cast aluminum?

I don't know why they couldn't. I'd love to widen a set of 15x7 Z28 rims.

Here is the place I saw advertised on another camaro site and they do steel and aluminum wheels. www.weldcraftwheels.com I called and talked to them it is $200 per wheel which is not cheap but by time you buy wheel adapters for ZR1 wheels it's not that much more.

I would think if they made the IROC rims in 17x9 & 17x10 or 18x9 & 18x10 that would be highly desirable not to mention trick.

I've seen some pics of camaros with the 18" IROC wheels with a slight drop and you can't beat the look.

It really depends on how much more you want them widened, what backspacing is available, and if you're willing to run adapters or not.

Heres what i'd try for, see if they are avail in 17x8 or 18x8 with 4" to maybe 4.25" and go for 1" wider, 4.25" would be getting close and would be more likely to work with the 18's, with 4.25" and 1" wider i'd say expect to run stock slip on spacers up front to get the rim to clear the tie rod end.

You'll probably have to run spacers if you widen them. Widening will change the backspacing. If you add an inch to the wheel, you'll add an inch to the backspacing. Sounds like it'll get costly real quick.

With a 18x8 adding 1" you *might* be able to get away without an adapter, a 17" add an inch and you'll probably be in bad shape, add 1.5" and you might be able to get away running 1" adapters.

If I was that set on running them i'd say go for the 18" have an inch added and you would probably be in the best shape.

That depends on if you’re talking about the front or the rear…, yea, 0 offset is best for the front, but in the rear you really want to tuck the wheels in a little.

If you added 1” you’d end up with a ½” offset, which would be roughly the same as you get on the factory 15” rims that were used on all 4’s, and if you added slightly more then 1.5” you’d have about the same as what you have on the factory rear, 16” “high tech” rims (they are supposed to be 16mm which should be less then 5/8”, but I’ve found that the “high tech” rims like what my formula came with have and offset that is almost 7/8”). I suspect that somewhere between ¾” and 1” offset is optimum for the rear with very wide tires, but they’ll require some inner fender work to tuck them in completely under the fender.
