I might be picking up a new car with a 6pt cage. This is sweet in all, but I will be driving this car everyday and I do occassionally have people in the back seats. Is it possible to cut off the straight bars and install removable ones for the sides and the bar that goes behind the front seats (rear seat savers)?

 

Do your passangers a favor, just do not endanger their lives, by trying to put them in back seats, in a roll caged car. Even if you do remove the cross bar, the location of the main hoop, is well withing the area that their heads can come in contact with.

 

I understand this...even had a friend knock himself out on one when he was in the back seat of a Monte SS with a cage and a drunk driver slammed into them from behind. I just want to have the option ya know. But yes, I do understand that situation and **** happens no matter what, but I don't want to deny somebody a place to sit because I have a cage in my car.

 

If you're going to do that, just cut the whole cage out and remove it all. It won't be legal for any kind of racing, and it'll be annoying and hazardous enough to make it not worth keeping.

 

That was actually my next question. I thought about it and in reality the rear seat passengers are just that, if they want in, they can figure out how to get back there. The side bars are still in question though. I have seen it done on quite a few cars so I guess if I get the car, one of my first trips will be to the local chassis guy to see what he suggests.

 

The door bars can be converted to swing out bars to allow getting in and out of the car easier and will still be legal. If you cut out the main hoop crossbar, the roll bar will not be track legal below 12.00 in the 1/4 mile.

 

Just curious as to how the swing door bars work... Do they actually move when the door is opened and closed, or do the bars get removed through the use of pins or such? Does anyone have any close up pics of this type of set up? I am currently going to instal one of Jegs 8point roll bars, and would love to have this feature - especially if it's legal. (legal for both NHRA and SCCA - anyone know?)

The side bars are pinned and swing out separately.

 

The bar is cut at near the top and bottom. A pivot point is created at the bottom cut, normally above the door line. A receiver pocket is attached at the top. To open the bar, you open the door then pull a retaining pin at the top and swing the bar out. The bar will open and rest against the open door.

I had to put a 10 point cage in my DAILY DRIVEN camaro to be track legal on the weekends.

I use swing out side bars.. Rear seats are N/A though. I wouldnt even think about putting anyone back there. When I get time I'm just going to build a light weight delete plate to replace the rear seats.

With the swing out side bars, it really aint that bad for street use. Mine has only been in since early march though. I drive the car between 9K and 12K miles a year

Either go with the swing out, or build a side bar like mine or Kandied's(last I checked anyhow...). - I'd post pics, but I'm at work and my net is down at home. - Basically, my side bar drops down to about 8" off the floor, directly down the side of the seat, then bends toward the front, and goes up to the kick panel area. I added a small piece of pipe from the floor up to the bend to brace it. Although it's not NHRA legal, it helps stiffen the chassis, and allows you to get in and out pretty easily.

yeah, it's in the vert. - Your's looks good. My side bar is a lot like yours, but I added a brace to the bottom of the bend in the side bar, tied at an angle down to the corner of the floor and the main hoop. I'll post a pic tonight, but I currently have dial-up at home so I've just been checking TGO while on lunch at work.

 

Here's a couple shots, but there are several on the boards. I'll be posting a ton when she's all re-done. I'm going full frame, but staying on 17's, w/ full power, a/c, etc. I'm gonna get rid of ALL the unibody crap to lighten this 4000lb pig up.

having a caged car isn't an option. if you are going to ever put more then one passenger in the car remove the cage or buy a different car.

 

I agree 1000%...don't risk anybody's life and let them get in the back seat of your caged car! I've removed the rear seats in my car in anticipation of an 8pt bar. If you are going to have people in the back ditch the cage! If you're in an accident and your passenger gets hurt or worse it's all your fault...you could be looking at some big legal issues.

...you mean these cars actually came with a rear seat??? I thought that was just space for those bikini models to stand.......
I eliminated my rear seat long ago. Its basically use-less anyhow. Besides, my stereo will look cool as hell sitting there under that speedster toneau I'm working on.....

 

The back seat is really more comfy if you take it out and put a thick soft towel down to sit on, lots more room but never put anyone in the back if you have a cage
