Coil springs problem? Help?

I bought Moog coils springs for my '82 TA. The fronts are part # 5610 & the rears are part # 5665. The rears fit fine. The fronts have 8 coils versus what I originally took off...6 coils. The coils on the left in the pic below are my originals & the coils on the right are the new ones. The news ones also look to be about 2" higher? My mechanic even reordered the Moog coil springs for the front for my year car & they still came in as being part # 5610...the same ones I bought in the pic on the right? Are these the right ones, just made differently now? Just don't want the front of my car higher than the back?

Re: Coil springs problem? Help?

If you look you'll see that your original springs are made of a much thicker wire. Your new springs will give you a ride height that is close to the same as the old springs because they are softer and will compress the spring further. With that said you have the wrong springs for your car. You need the moog 5662's that came on the IROC's. If you install those springs your handling will suffer.

Re: Coil springs problem? Help?

I was told to get the #5608 & that my difference in springs is due to the #5610's being for "EXCEPT" 215/65/15" Tires- The base suspension rather than the WS6 Performance with 4 Wheel Disc.

Re: Coil springs problem? Help?

Ok if I'm hearing you correctly, the spring you bought is for a base model. Which means the old spring is probably the F-41 suspension package spring which is the 450 lb/in spring, not the 650 lb/in IROC spring I suggested.

I'll have to dig up my moog part number list to tell you the correct part number.

Re: Coil springs problem? Help?

Ok...here's what happened.
Went to my speed shop & told him I wanted Moog springs for my '82 TA stock height. He gave me:
-5610 for the fronts
-5665 for the rears
When I brought them to my mechanic he said the rear springs were the same as far as coils & height. The front springs were what you see pictured above. I then talked to a well-known TA specialist on another board. He told me I needed the 5608 front springs, not the ones I have as their for the "except" base model & not for the ws6 package that I didn't even know I had? I just want the same, stock front springs as I'm not trying to raise or lower the car. I sent him an e-mail back asking "well then are the rear 5665's correct then"? I still haven't heard back from him via e-mail yet?
All I know for sure is that the 5610's have 8 coils versus the 6 coils that originally came off the car. The 5610's are also about 2" higher than my stock ones.

Re: Coil springs problem? Help?

Take a look at this link:
http://jeffd.50megs.com/Moog_Spring_Page.htm

As you can see there is very little difference between the 5610's and the 5608's. Neither of which are going to match your stock springs. Per the specs in that link it looks like you have the 5662's. Best way to tell is to measure the wire diameter and spring height and compare it to the chart.

I'm absolutely 100% positive of my part #'s...took them right off the box. I originally ordered the 5610-fronts & 5665-rears. I'm now being told to get the 5608-fronts. I should have them within the hour, then I'll match them up.

Re: Coil springs problem? Help?

OK...just spoke with a tech guy at Summit Racing. He said the only option for the rears are the 5665 so I'm definately good there. He said the 5610 fronts are for all TA, EXCEPT with p215/65R/15 tires, which I have...so the 5610-fronts are definately the wrong ones (those are the ones pictured on the right above). He also said I need the 5608-fronts, the same part number my TA specialist told me to go with so I should be all set now. The only other number that also came up for the fronts was 5642, but again...EXCEPT with P215 tires...so gotta be the 5608.

Re: Coil springs problem? Help?

What I'm saying is the only difference between the 5610's and the 5608's is the 5608's are 14.9" tall while the 5610's are 15.2" tall. The spring you took out of your car looks to be much shorter than either, and looks to match up with the 5662's at 13.2" tall.

There isn't enough of a difference between the 5610's and the 5608's to warrant spending the cash on another set of springs.

Re: Coil springs problem? Help?

Understood...but I can't use the 5662 with the stock P215/65R/15 tires? Going back for a minute, who's even to say those springs I took out are original or haven't been cut as someone said a few posts ago? Well, it's down to either the 5608 or 5662...I guess it's just trial & error time?

Re: Coil springs problem? Help?

Those springs are not specific to those tires for performance or clearance reasons. Those were the smallest tires ever put on a camaro, which usually corresponded with some one who would want a better riding car. You can run the 5662's with no downsides other than a stiffer ride and a slightly lower stance.

Re: Coil springs problem? Help?

I installed the 5608's...they were 1 coil higher than the stock ones. Once the car comes down off the lift I'll compare the front & rear height. The front of the car is heavier than the back, but if I'm not happy I'll just put in the 5662's.
