-new springs,, or not.-

Have a 1982 z with 233,000 miles. and suspension seems to be fine.[ NEW struts and shocks and pan rod] - Was thinking of going to all new springs, and possably ones to lower it approx 1" .----Any suggestins on brand to use.---- Also, car seems to ride alot harder ?? stiff ?? over most bumps. then it use to. and feels like car is breaking apart [best to describe] over alot of bumps. --VISUALLY everthing is good in suspentsion. [orig springs]------I-HAVE THE topdown solution subframe conn, but havent put them in yet.----Will just adding the lowering springs make my problems worse, ? -- I also swear that somtimes the car is sitting higher in the front at times...------- Someone told me to put in springs for the R/S MODEL.

233K miles, the OE springs are probably ripe for replacement. Do you want to lower it? Choose your brand of aftermarket springs but keep in mind that the struts and shocks that are in your car now may not be a proper match if you lower the car.

With that many miles and age (and associated spring sag), you may find that one-inch lowering springs won't lower your car noticeably (and who knows, may even raise it a bit). Wade's right about replacement. You might consider the Moog IROC-style springs that Spohn and most auto parts store carry.

Re: -new springs,, or not.-

If you already think ride is too harsh then aftermarket springs will make things worse.Herb Adams(designer of 2nd & third gens suspension) also says z & iroc springs are too stiff for bumpy street driving and suggests using base camaro/firebird springs and cutting 1/2 coil off fronts for optimal handling while maintaining adequate ride height & ride quality. In your case though your car because of age is probably already 1" lower due to sag so even if u did this it would still be same height or slightly higher.part #'s for moog brand springs are 5602 fronts,cc635 rears.Modifying cars is a series of compromises ,to get one thing u have to usually give up something else so if u want to go 1" lower then u have now you have to live with harsh ride of aftermarkets over bumps.Although handling on smooth surface is excellent.

Perhaps so (and I certainly would argue with Herb Adams or anyone else on the board), but I don't think that my Moog IROC-style springs (fronts 5662 and rears 5665) along with Koni Reds are too stiff. Ultimately, comfort is determined by the driver.

JamesC,

Now that you have new front and rear springs how does your car feels when you ride now? I will be replacing everything on my front end soon. I have already replaced the rear springs and shocks and I am very pleased with how the rear feels when I drive it. How do you like those 5662 front springs? Did you replace everything on the frontend? Thansk for all the help and advice.

The ride quality is, IMO, far superior to the old OE springs and Monroe struts/shocks--my wife even commented on the ride! The 5662's are fine. You can check my set-up out below.

Re: -new springs,, or not.-

how much did the Moogs run you?

i really want some eibach dropsprings but i need new springs NOW, and i need to save cash

i would hate for my car to sit higher than it does now though, it looks fine as it is... i know the springs that are in the car are completely toasted...

Sorry nothing with the new springs installed. The front sits very nicely, the rear is a bit high even though I removed the stock isolators and replaced with radiator hose. I may eventually cut a half coil. I like the ride well enough, however, that I'm currently disinclined to do that.

Around $110 from CarQuest. Spohn sells them for $125 + shipping. Looks and handling, unfortunately, are usually two different things.

Re: -new springs,, or not.-

Hey james , I looked at your pic, [nice] and what i can see in the pic is that my car with all its miles and stock springs does still set at the same heaight as yours [looks dang close]---I might go with stock spring for a base camaro[rs], as there is ALOT OF pot holes and bumps here, and gets real anoying when hitting them and car feels like its fallen apart.----WAS ??? hesetant tho to do ,,as i work in a chry garage and we recently had to put a pair of moog springs in the front of a 89 [rs] that were broken, and the moog we got , made it ride like a chopper [lol], and it had about 9" of clearence between wheel and fender.-----We then went to local gm, and got them and had same problem.--------------ALSO, on my old springs , I can fit about three fingers between top of tire and fender [front] and about 4 fingers in rear.

Humm, with new Moog 5662's my front, from ground to fender lip, sits at just under 27 inches. As I mention, the rear is higher.

Re: -new springs,, or not.-

I've replaced springs on 2 high mileage IROCs now, and neither had any sort of spring sag, both were in the 180K range. The ones I just took out even had one half coil broken off.
I put the MOOG 5662 springs in with 1/2 coil cut off and got about an inch drop in the front. They were also shorter and thicker than the BZW springs I took out. I need to get the car over to my friends house to compare to his Eibach Prokit springs. The only difference I seem to notice from the old springs is that the struts now don't seem to be doing a good job and need to be replaced. Always something.

Re: -new springs,, or not.-

Many members lower their cars and seem quite satisfied with their decision, but I've always avoided it (though I like the look). There just seems to be too many negatives, not the least of which is dragging.

Members say there are two sets of springs used in these cars: 5665 and the cargo coils CC635.
