Im building a nasty pump gas SBC..and its almost ready to be in the car..Im going with a TH400 and It has a Moser 9in already..the car is an 1987 GTA..Its a street car that I will/ and do drive. Should I put a cage in it..or just a roll bar? The inside is all great shape..I redid a lot of it..Im looking to run low low low 11s on motor..and idk were at with spray..but is there anything I need to know about puting a cage in or what? Whats the best?

Re: Thinking of a Cage

A 6 point roll bar is fine down to 10.0 as long as the floor and firewall are not modified. You can install swing out door bars to make getting in and out a lot easier for street use.

A 6 point bar adds about 70 pounds to the car. A full cage depends on how many extra bars go in. My cage has a sill bar, X bars in the doors and a knee bar.

As to putting them in, the cost of a roll bar/cage kit is cheap. I bought my basic kit from Jegs which came with a couple of prebent tubes and a bunch of straight tubes with notches cut on one end. The cost of having one installed is expensive. Getting a chassis shop to put one in, you can estimate $100/$150 per point. Interior needs to be removed, plates need to be welded to the floor for the tubes to attach to, tubes need to be cut to length and maybe notched. You need to either MIG or TIG all the welds.

Installing a roll bar or cage means nobody will be able to easily use the back seat any more.

Re: Thinking of a Cage

Yes that's my car. I bought it as a basic street car back in 1999 with a carbed 383 stroker in it and I never drove it on the street once. It stripped it down and made it into a race car from the day I owned it. In 1999 it ran 15's. It now runs mid to high 9's and can never be made street legal again.

Re: Thinking of a Cage

there's a lot of info on here about roll bars/cages if you do a search. - NHRA/IHRA tracks require a minimum of a 6-point for all cars that run 11.99 or faster.

a roll bar makes the back seat beyond useless. In the event of an accident it can be the cause of death for some one riding in the back.

Re: Thinking of a Cage

I thought that a 6 point roll bar is needed when you are 11.49 or faster?

Other than Competition, who makes roll bars for f-bodies?

Re: Thinking of a Cage

Actually it's a minimum of a 5 point bar at 11.49 but everyone puts the passenger door bar in for the 6 point. NHRA only lowered the time from 11.99 to 11.49 to match IHRA rules within the last couple of years.

Re: Thinking of a Cage

Well Im sure it will run around 11.50s..Im runing 12.8s-9s with a 75 shot on a stock TPI 350...It dynoed at 489 and then a 200 shot..but I dont want people to walk up to it and see a cage..then they know its fast..but do is a roll bar is ok? will that be enough? Im not wanting to tear up my beautiful interior!!

Re: Thinking of a Cage

roll bar and subframe connectors will do you fine. - I've got a buddy running a drag radial mustang coupe, runs mid 5's in the 1/8, mid 8's in the 1/4. He's only got an 8-point. Got thrown at of our closest 1/4 mile a few weeks back though.... - They let us come back, but only if he shuts down after 1/8.
