Rear Coil Cutters Step In

I swapped in Moog 5665's nearly nine months ago. From day one to present, they haven't "settled" a fraction. I removed the OE insulator, which dropped the car a 1/2" or so, but not nearly enough to satisfy my sense of the aesthetic. I'm looking for another 1/2" to an 1" drop. If you've cut, how much and what was the drop? Afterward, did you use radiator hose or the OE insulator? Did you attempt to heat and flatten the topmost coil?

Re: Rear Coil Cutters Step In

How does cutting the bump stops lower the the car?

I have never cut my springs, I just installed eibach pro-kit springs but from alot of posts I've read the best way is to do it is to cut a 1/4" off at a time and see where that gets you. Do a search for cut springs and read some of the posts you find to learn more.

i cut 1/2 coil off mine and liked the drop it gave me along with doing the heater hose mod. No idea on the drop though, I now have 1/2 coil cut out of all the springs.

Did you simply cut and swap in or did you heat and flatten the coil top (on the rears)?

they are like 3 inches thick and they sit right again the axle. If you cut them...they will lower the rear. I just removed mine completely with the air ride set up and it got about 2 inches lower in the rear....

Re: Rear Coil Cutters Step In

Once you are low enough to be hitting the bumpstops that would help you go lower on an air ride car but this guy has moog replacement springs. He's not even close to the bumpstops. The ride would be awefully rough if the car rode on the bumpstops at ride height.

just cut and reinstalled. they flatten out once the weight of the chassis is on them. no issues whatsoever and I've had the entire chassis weight on the rear tires not the fronts with nothing breaking

Cool. That's what I wanted to hear. Weather's nice here tomorrow, so I'll whack a 1/4 coil to begin and see what happens.

Re: Rear Coil Cutters Step In

Well, I whacked off approximately 3/8 of a coil. The drop is a disappointing 1/4", which puts the rear down to 27 3/4 (not too bad, I guess). The front is not quite 27, so I have a bit of a rake. Maybe I'll live with it for a while and see what my attitude is when the weather warms.

Re: Rear Coil Cutters Step In

we did my buddies 4th gen by cutting the back, he already had coil overs in the front.

Ended up taking about 1 1/2 coils out, and removing the isolater, and did the heater hose. We cut in 1/2 coil steps until we got the 28 tire" even with the fender lip. We have sitched the car to a 26" now so gota drop it another 1" along with the front to get the look he wants.

We found it easiest to do the back by leaving the shocks unbolted, and just jack the car up, remove springs, cut, reinstall, set car back down measure, and assume another 1/4" of sag after driving a bit.

Re: Rear Coil Cutters Step In

the sprins need to settle before measurement, drive around the block. some will settle 1/4 of an inch and others 1", it depends on if they were centered when being indexed

Re: Rear Coil Cutters Step In

As I mentioned above, my springs never "settled" nor have they after the trimming. There is no indexing on the rears (unless you count how the springs mount in the OE insulators which I'm not using.

Re: Rear Coil Cutters Step In

what i mean by indexing is that the rear coils dont sit in the pocket on the chasis corectly and part of the spring sits on the coil pocket on the chasis and not around it, evertime i jack up the rears it allows the coils to come loose and 3/4 of the time they dont go in right when you drop the car back down. if the isolaters are usd than the rubber tends to stick and not properly allow the springs to fit in, but with no isolaters, metal on metal the springs tend to work there way in after hitting a few bumps. you'll no when you do cause you'll hear the spring groan as it seats its self

i spent weeks trimming and matching the springs and shimming them so that the car sit level form left to right and for what ever reason the right rear sits 3/4" higher than the rest, so i measured from the spring pocket down to the chasis of the car to find that the spring pockets on the chasis were different from left to right the spring pocket on the right rear is lower than the one on left, causing the car to sit high. so when you measure make sure to measure each wheel idvidually, they may differ from side to side
