CM needs to be TIG welded. Typical roll bar/cage installation will cost you $100-$150 per point if done by a proper chassis shop. It depends how much interior needs to be removed/installed.

In the bay area your probably going to spend between $1500 to 2000 to get one installed. All of the interior will need to be out and you will need to purchase a kit. Be sure to check the NHRA specs before installing.

What do you consider reasonable?

I work for Wilsons Motorsports in San Jose $1500 to $2000 would be with the interior still in the car and the auto tech/ fabricator has to remove it.

At our shop we charge $800-1200 with interior out and depending on how well the kit actually fits the car ie how much cutting, notching etc we have to do.

If you pay $1500 to 2000 to get installed and welded in with the interior out would be rip off in my opinion as a mechanic that works at a speed shop.

And if your wondering why i don't do it myself it's because i don't have time. in the morning i work at wilsons and at night i work at NUMMI in fremont 6 days a week.

Re: Reasonably priced roll cage installer in san jose area?

The NHRA rules have changed quite a bit. Now a day you need rocker bars, and you feel have to be behind the front a pillar bar for the cage to be legal.

All I was saying is the bay area is probably the most expensive area in the us to get a cage installed. You know what it cost to live here and operate a business. If you having some back yard guy do it at his house you can get it done cheaper. If your shop is so inexpensive why don't you just make an appointment and drop it off they and pay yourself to install it. What are you looking for some $500.00 cage install?

I really don't get the point of your post.

First of all please read the post completely before posting a reply. i asked about an 8 point. a-pillar bar?! there is no a-pillar bar on a 8 point cage hell there is no front of the cage.

Second of all you are talking about a 10-14 point cage in your previous posts. Talking about a 10-14 point cage yes your price is correct.

Second of all none of these prices are cheap. I am just looking to see if anyone has had a cage installed for better price in the area.

Re: Reasonably priced roll cage installer in san jose area?

OK I DID READ THE POST! OBVIOUSLY YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT!

Not to get into a pis*ing contest but post the correct verbiage on what your looking for and if you don't know, say so. For a guy who supposedly works at a race car fabrication shop. WTF?

I am sure Stephen 87 IROC will confirm what I am posting!

A) A cage is consisted of A pillar bars. Hence the word "CAGE"
see attached picture from S&W Race Car catalog.

B) A roll bar is just that. Hence the word "BAR"
see attached picture from S&W Race Car catalog

Now for a bit of history...

In the old days a cage was a 8 point. They did not count the door bars as a mounting point. The SFI specifications say the door bar must land on the "A pillar bar." Not on the floor next to the "A pillar bar." So technically if you count the points it is an 8 point not actually 10 point as all of the manufactures now call it. Having put many roll bas and roll cages in vehicles over the years, I have a pretty good idea of what is what.

Many shops used to install 8 point roll bars and 8 point roll cages.

Also traditionally roll bars are usually 1 3/4" material and roll cages are 1 5/8" material.

Re: Reasonably priced roll cage installer in san jose area?

I was just about to clarify roll cage/roll bar before you posted

Everyone thinks they have a cage. Without an A-pillar bar and halo bar, it's only a roll bar. You can have an 8 point roll bar and an 8 point roll cage but they're not the same. The 8 point roll cage doesn't have the diagonal bars under the main hoop.

The difference in tube size is why I ripped out my old 1-3/4" tube roll bar when I put in a cage. I wanted the 1-5/8" main tubes instead of the smaller tubes attached to the larger ones which is what is usually done with a cage conversion kit.

I also installed sill bars when I put in my cage. They don't count as any extra points but add stiffness to the car. Sort of like SFC but inside the car.

Re: Reasonably priced roll cage installer in san jose area?

Stephen,

I guess with us being older we know what is a cage and what is a roll bar. I see you also remember the old days when people used to install 8 point cages. As you know they are not legal anymore in NHRA.

As you know a roll bar is usually 1 3/4" and a cage is 1 5/8".

Thanks for posting so other people really know what is what.

Brett

Well, talked with my buddy today who's waiting on a cage for his car... Guess he changed his mind on who to use a while back. He's taking his car to a guy located in/near Yuba City instead.
