Front control arm bump stops

Apparently the rubber bump stops on the front are different for cars with 15" and 16" wheels. Why is that? If you have the 245/50/16 tires they are actually a tad smaller in diameter than the most common 15"sizes used on 3rd gens, so i wouldn't think it is to prevent hitting up in the wheel well.
