Need picking quality parts!

Ok guys in october i will be doing my suspension work and i want it to handle like a beast! This what im planning on doing first springs. i'm thinking of the pro kit dont know yet? Then shocks and struts i would like to get adjustable ones! I just dont know whats going to hold up for awhile? Then i was going to thrown on the wonder bar thats easy enough.
So i think this will make my car handle alot better!
So please name good quality parts that will make my car handel like a beast!
thanks

Re: Need picking quality parts!

as for shocks/struts+springs, I don't at this time know for a fact this applies to third gens, but EVERY other vehicle I've ever done suspension work to (front and rear wheel drive) I never noticed one till I'd had the other done. While you can put new shocks and struts on 18 yr old springs, I wouldn't do it again. When I change those items on my 91 rs It'll be both at the same time for full effect.

For recommendations on the shocks/struts Tokiko blues are my favorites. Some times you can get a good deal on ebay but be careful of cheap knockoffs. Springs, really kinda depends on what your looking for out of your stance. You will sacrifice some comfort for handling, but for some folks thats a sacrifice they are willing to make. Depending on your drop aplication Eibachs (sic) are always a good choice. Same as with the Tokiko's, you might find a good set for the camaro on ebay/craigslist but again the same warning to be careful of the cheap knockoffs.

Re: Need picking quality parts!

Why don't you help yourself out and try doing a search? This has been covered a million times before.

I ended up with Prokit, Koni yellows, and the whole UMI suspension catalog available for 3rd gens.

Does it ride rough, maybe a little bit, but not to bad. I used to daily drive it until recently went I got a company car.

Click on links for my Vb garage to see the full list.

Oh, and speaking from experience, round up all the parts you need 1st, then install them all at once. Instead of buying parts and installing them right away.

Re: Need picking quality parts!

I just put an order in for Hotpart Strut mounts (better deal than Spohn), Koni Yellows, and the Eibach Pro-kit. I already have Spohn SFC, UMI LCARB, UMI adjustable LCA, UMI adjustable PHB, 36mm hollow front bar w/poly, and 23mm solid rear with poly. I'm still waiting for a good deal on a STB (if you have one for sale send me a message). I also noticed my torque arm bushing is half missing so I'll be swapping that for a poly piece. The sway bars and bushings, and the UMI rear suspension pieces made a huge difference to begin with so I'm really excited to get the new stuff on my car.

There is both good and bad to doing all suspension work at once. Bad is that you don't know how big of a difference certain parts made to the handling of the vehicle. This may not be that important if you don't race or if you are impatient. The good is that it is all done one time and it is over with. More often than not, I agree with what Doc_G said. Do all the shocks/struts, strut mounts, and springs at one time... it's a big job, and a pain to have to redo something. I would also wait to install all the rear suspension stuff at one time (PHB, LCA, swaybar and bushings, LCARB). Do the front swaybar and bushings and wonderbar at the same time also. Stuff like SFC and STB can be done almost anytime without issue. Point is, break it up into sections. It saves time and effort.

If your not going to be racing it, I would suggest going with KYB AGX (they are adjustable) since they are cheaper and still stiffer than the stock units. They are also the next step below Koni and Belstien. Only reason I went all out and got the KONI yELLOWS IS BECAUSE i AUTOCROSS A LOT.

Wow i think your car will handle better than a vette!
If your looking for a stb go with the UMI one. Just got mine yesterday. for $151 you can have it shipped to your door through BYUNSPEED.com.

I also agree with the stock sway bars, my 36/24 combo handles very well. I personally think that is the biggest you should go though IMO. anything bigger might be overkill.

on a side note is it really hard to change Swaybar bushings without a lift? dont think it will be but just thought id ask.

Thats what I'm hoping for! I'm hoping after all that (and a little more seat time) I'll dominate my class. I'm leaning more towards UMI since I already have so many of their parts and know they have quality products. I also like the fact that I don't have to drill holes in my strut towers. Unfortunatly, after all the stuff I just bought, I'm a little short on cash so I'm waiting to find a used one for around $100, or I can just wait for a couple paychecks... but it has to be black.

Many people often go with the 36/24 combo because that is what the factory did so they think it is best. However, swaybar size is based off of how the car reacts to driver input during turns and most importantly driver preferance. The reason I am only running a 23 solid bar in the back is because with anything more, the rear of my car would want to oversteer like crazy, but then again, I have only tried the 22 and the 23. The 22 didn't allow me to rotate the car enough coming out of turns so that is why I stuck with 23. I'm hoping the 24 that I'll be installing for the next event will be better, but who knows.

As far as changing sway bars... I just pull into my garage (for the level surface) jack the car up, put it on jack stands and pull out the impact. Very simple swap. If you only want to change bushing I still think the whole swaybar should be taken out. Without taking it off, the endlinks would be trying to hold the sway bar up, so you would be fighting yourself. Plus, with it still on the car, there isn't as much room to work on it. It's only two extra bolts, why not take it off...

Mike

PS - Why is it that a company called "UNSPEED" sells parts to make your car go faster. The name completely condradicts what the company is trying to do. I don't understand it...

Re: Need picking quality parts!

I think Racing Geek's got it fairly well covered.
Although, I don't know if I would suggest getting the KYBs. From what I've heard, they work well at first, but wear out faster than the Tokicos and alot faster than the KONIs.
By the way, did anyone else notice I'm the third car in this thread with KONIs/Prokit?

A lot of what I know is from reading your posts.

From what I remember reading, the AGX's only wear out faster when put on lowered cars, but then again, GoodlookinRS did say he wanted it lowered. I'm lacking sleep right now and just got home from school, but there aren't any Tokicos that are adjustable are there?

Technically I wont have the Koni's and Pro-kit until Tuesday.

Re: Need picking quality parts!

Thanks.
That's what I was worried about- he mentioned lowering the car in the orignal post.
The high end Tokicos (the Iluminas, I think) are adjustable.
You ordered and sent money for them, so according to the accrual basis accounting, they are your's. Haha, I hate general accounting.

Re: Need picking quality parts!

I have a some what unrelated question- do you have a strut tower bar that will work with a TBI setup? My car has an open element breather on it. Thanks!

Re: Need picking quality parts!

Currently we only have one for the 87-92 TPI Camaro models.

Thanks for asking!
