So my wheel bearings have started grinding and need replacement.

Was planning on doing that tomorrow, but I need to make sure I get the right parts.

I know I need inner and outer bearings. What kind of seal do I need?

Do I need just one seal per wheel or two?

Also, do I need the special tools? I see directions using special tools, and then directions not using special tools.

It should be called an inner wheel seal, that pic looks like what it is. Only one seal per tire. Only thing that comes to mind is there might be a large torq or allen to take the calipers off.
Pull tire and calipers
remove dust cap
take out cotter pin, nut, and outer bearing
rotor will slide off with rear bearing and seal
yank that seal and rear bearing out
put new packed rear bearing in and tap in the seal, and put all back together.

 

What about the races?

The passenger side inner race seems worn, think it should be replaced.

Manual says take it to a machine shop. That the only way?

 

New bearings come with new races.

Sure. Drive the old out with something, perhaps a brass drift, then drive the new back in. Use a north, south, east, west driving configuration.

Anybody know what size the spindle lock nut is? My wheel bearing went bad and the nut is on really tight.

 

Put a socket on it and see. Actually, the nut is supposed to be hand tight (if not, that may be why the bearing went bad).

Yeah well the largest socket i have is 24mm and its bigger than that. I was just wanted to know so i dont have to go buy a bunch of sockets i dont need.

 

27 mm. Before buying anything, you might try a pair of channel locks, a pipe wrench, or an adjustable wrench.

Dumb question, but you did pull the cotter pin out, correct?

 

Yeah I pulled the pin out. It turns out the bearing broke into pieces and were welded to the spindle. So I ended up replacing the whole spindle.

The lesson here is that sometimes knowing the proper torque spec's and putting it together (right or by the book) can keep your car on the road and not wrecked.
