9 bolt help...

Ok, I bought a 9 bolt rear end with 2:73/2:77 gears (obviously a 2 series carrier. I took it apart, bought a 3 series carrier (made sure it was the 3 series carrier) then bought a set of US gear/Strange 3:70 ring and pinion set with master install kit. I brought it to a shop to install them gears and axle bearings etc. When the mechanic got around to the ring and pinion end of it he has had problems gettimg the pinion gear in. Needless to say the rearend has been in the shop for 2 years and i am pissed!!!! He, for some reason, can't get the crush sleeve to crush even with up to 375 ft/bls of torque and wants to give up and charge me to get it back. I don't believe i should pay for an unfinished job but thats besides the point. My question is, is there any one who has done one of these and maybe give me some insight on what he might be encountering on why he is having trouble doing this. He even bought a new set of gears and rtied them and had the same problem. I now got over $700 into this rearend in parts and dont want to thow it away. PLEASE HELP!!

Re: 9 bolt help...

he put the new shims and pressed on the new bearing, then slid on the crush sleeve ans put the pinion shaft through the pumkin, put the yolk over the shft from the outside of the pumkin. put the washer and nut on and tried to tight the nut down and crush the crush sleeve to the right depth but it wont crush.

Re: 9 bolt help...

There are two different large pinion bearings for them, he must have the wrong one installed.

I had the same problem and that was the cure.

Re: 9 bolt help...

glad those guys had an answer for you - just for reference, this would have "fit" better in the drivetrain board than suspension

2 years? seriously? wow.
