i need help i need to know wat kind of cars i can pull a steering column out of that will work in my 89 camaro its my daily i did a search and nothing came up in reference of what years and vehicles one could be pulled out of thanks in advance

Well, it depends if you want the exact column or just one that will work. 1989 was a one year only column because it was the first years for VATS but the last year with no airbag. So if you want to keep everything working the way is should you need a column from an '89. However, the '84-'88 columns are identical to the 1989 column except they don't have the ship in the key. You can put in an '84-'88 column but you will have to disable your VATS system or the car won't start. Also, if you find a column from an '89 you need to get the VATS module along with it because it needs to match the chip in the key. On an '89 it will be in the dash to the right of the column and just above an to the left of the radio. It's not easy to get to!!! It will be a black or gray box that will say Passkey on it.

If you don't have the matching VATS module the key won't help you much. However, you could get a key blank with a resistor chip that matches your current column but have it cut to work in the new column and then you could leave in your existing module.Originally Posted by fivestar
