front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

Dang! I dont know what else to do.

I cant get the front wheels off! I got all the lugs out, chked twice.
I been beating the tire with the biggest hammer I have for hours.
I even set the car down on the loose wheel - thinking the weight would break it loose. Im gettin no love from my bird lately

the wheels are aluminum, how could they rust on!

Anyone ran into this before and have any ideas

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

Try some PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench and soak the area. Just avoid getting it on your brakes and the finish of your wheels. Might help it break it loose. I've seen em stick before, but nothing like that.

How bout a 2x4 from the other side of the car. Brace one end against the inside of the rim and beat the crap out of the other end with a sledge hammer if your that desperate.

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

Maybe a set of soft ropes around the back of the wheel and a come along tied to something solid?

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

it actually happens alot it is caused by a chemical reaction between the alluminum wheel and the steel hub. excuse the expression but you are just going to have to beat it off.i usually use a 10 lb sledge hammer. it works for me most of the time but it does suck.

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

Take it for a good fast lap around the block ... that should do it!

WAIT ... STOP ... DON'T! I was just kidding...

Seriously though, some penetrating oil overnight should help.

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

I'm actually having the exact same problem on my camaro. tried WD-40 and putting it on the ground w/o lug nuts but its a no go. its stuck hard. I'm actually thinking about driving it a VERY short distance with my lugs slightly loose.

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

most the time when I ran into this problem I could sit on the ground next to the car and kick the tire alternating left right foot on opposite sides of the tire and it would pop off... only used the hammer on steel wheels. good luck hope you dont crack a wheel lol

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

if you don't want to go through this again, my friend gave me some advice. put anti-sieze on the mating surface of the wheel. sounds strange but if you're having as much trouble as me you might want to think about it.

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

did you ever get your wheel unstuck? I drove mine around the block with the lug nuts a little loose 4 miles and it didn't come unstuck. i even got into a drift, not on purpose though. I'm thinking maybe driving on dry pavement and locking up the front wheels to shock the wheel loose. this is ridiculous.

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

Just a thought..... let the air out of the tires. IF you are hitting on the rubber it is not hitting full on. Take a 2' 2x4 and work your way around the outside lip in 45* increments. This may help to start loosening the area at the center hub. Again..... just a thought!

How about loosening the lugs, and then rocking the steering wheel back and forth really hard while the wheels are on the ground?

tried that, we need some serious force.

1LOMARO-could you give me more details on your idea?

How about hoisting the front end, and taking a big ratchet strap and hooking the two wheels together and putting some tensoin on it and then beating it with a block of wood and hammer?

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

Take the 2x and starting @ the 1 and 6 o'clock positions hit the 2x on both ends back and forth to create a see-sawing motion. Then rotate the wheel 90* and repeat. This should help to slowly loosen the wheel center. The reason for deflating the tire is to get away from the rubber taking the majority of the shock. You might need a extra set of hands to do so.

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

jack the front of the car up. put jack stands under the frame behind the front wheels. get a 2x4 about 3 feet long. need 2 buddies to help. let 1 hold the 2x4 on end 1 on the other while you take a sledge hammer and hit the board in the middle while they hold it against the rim. hit it a couple of hard licks, then roll the rim about a quarter turn hit it a couple hard licks. keep hitting it like this and turning until it comes loose, jimmy

i just use hydraulics and a board to force the wheels off the hubs. . .

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

happened to me recently,
i ended up having my GF's dad beat on the back of the wheel with a 25lb sledge hammer while i held a 2x8 up against it.
it took a lot of beating to get it off... no, seriously.

I'm a mechanic by trade and normally I'll use a torch on steel rims or do what your describing here for alloy ones. I just install the nuts a little loose and drive the car around the lot in tight circles till the wheel pops it's self loose.

well just a hydraulic ram of some sort or a hydraulic jack can work too... you can either use the opposite rim to brace the load or find a spot on the car as long as its strong or use something that is permanently attached to the floor etc... it is soooooo much easier and i have pop many sets of alloy rims off steel hubs this way fast and simple

hahaha, if only I had the traction to go in circles. its very icy out. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one thats tried this. I can't get to working on this immediately because my dad needs the shop to keep his diesel truck warm. I'll keep soaking the area w/ WD40, even though I've used like 1/2 a big can on this. I'll be sure to tell all when I get the rim off!

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

I've had this happen on an S- 10 Blazer with aluminum wheels. Try loosening your lug nuts, but not too much, and the put wood 4X4 blocks in front of and behind your tires with a little bit of space. Then drive the car and rock it back and forth against the 4X4's. That should do it. Be carefull not to make the lugs too loose or get too carried away with the rocking to prevent damage to the studs. And, the never- sieze before remounting again is a great idea to prevent this next time. Aluminum to steel is alwys a bitch corrosion- wise.

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

what you need is a 25lb sledge hammer on a 3-4 foot handle and just smash the **** out the inside of the tire...you will probably need to hit the rim to knock it off so use a piece of wood so soften the blow...if that dont work then directly hit the rim. if had to hit a few rims more than 10 times to get it off. once its off fire brush all the corosion off the rim and hub and studs and use lots of neversieze. that is really the quickest and easiest way to do it. and only way imo

Re: front wheels are "stuck" on the hub

did you get the rim off? if not i always do it by (btw all this is done with car in the air and stable)
A: using a floor jack to and slaming it into the tire
B: leaning against the car and kicking it on both sides (alternating)
C: mini sledge from behind
this has worked on the thousands of wheels ive worked on if it dont work for you then ime at a los

btw leave one lug loosely on so tire doesnt fly off and hit you in the face.........yeah it hurts

I've tried B, it got the other side off. A kinda scares me, but I just got a new floor jack so... the hammer from behind is looking good. might try the jack idea first.

I let the air out of the tire and jacked the car up by the rim w/ flat tire with no luck. i'm gonna get my friend to hold a board on the back and I'll beat on that for a while, its gotta come loose soon.

Jack your wheel up slightly, place a bottle jack sideways on the inside of the other rim and cut a 2x4 to go across to the inside of the other. Jack away! works every time! I saved my 2x4 as one of my "specialty" tools

YES!!! SUCCESS!!! the rim finally came off!!! I used a piece of wood on the front hoping to knock it loose, but then I took a sledgehammer to the back of the rim and just started lightly tapping eventually after a few rotations it came off!!!
