Planning On Imporving My Suspension To make It Handle Better Than Stock

Hi Guys,

Well guys I want to beef up my suspension to take on some turns, I have read some post that stated dat 3rd gens handling is not so bad. The reason why I want to beef up the suspension is because I have a cousin of mine who has a dumb Nissan 240sx good import but still domestics all the way lol. so yea he got his car with coil overs in it. i am tired of him telling me why did i get a domestic car that i should of gotten an import and BS like that. He also says that my car will never out handle his piece of dump, i dont say anything because i want to surprise him and his import when i do some suspension work lol and i outhandle him. I also want to beef up my suspension because i want to try some autocrossing seems like fun. The problem that is holding me back is.
I have no clue where to start, i read some post and i am not really educated yet on all the important parts to improve handling so this is wat i got so far plz let me know if i missed any component.
This is wat is gonna be needed to be upgraded:subframe connecters, spring, shocks, sway bars, lower control arms, panhard bar and wonder bar. if i missed anything let me know plz.

Ok so i looked around on Hawks website http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/su...omponents.aspx
there is alot of things in there that might be good, do u guys recommend any of those parts, I will be searching for other places for lower prices if there is. I really like checking on his site because its all for 3rd gens and most of the stuff is there.
I was really intrested in the coilover kit just because i could adjust the hight of the car. but idk if i should go with it.

I am also not very familiar with suspension brands that r of good quality other than spohn, bilsten, koni, kyb, hotchiks and other so if u guys can help me on that too.

I will not be doin the upgrades right now because I have a truck to finish building but i want to take a list on wat to get so i can do it as soon as i am done.

Well guys hope u guys can help me with any info.

from,
Edgar

my order would be: subframe connectors, springs, shocks, wonder bar, sway bar, panhard bar, lower control arms (maybe)

coil overs are really great because you can adjust them to suit your driving style. they're expensive though. if you stiffen your car you will have a definite advantage, I've heard the 240zx is as stiff as a wet noodle.

oh ok. cool. do u know which brands would u recommend me to get for some of the parts. thanx for some input.

yea thats why coil overs would be nice but maybe ur right they can be expensive, its just so cool how u can adjust em since i helped my cousin adjust his on his 240sx u can easily lower or lift the car up and if u say they r stiff as a wet noodle stock dam man u should see how stiff it is with those coil overs lol he has coil overs on all four corners but dam does it suck on mest up roads

Im in the process of upgrading mine as well, and have noticed that UMI, or BMR , and StranoPerformance.com . Im keeping my factory IROC suspension ride Height . So Im replacing my bent panhard bar, my front and rear sway bar bushings(poly of Course), But I also have factory 34mm front, and 23mm rear sway bar , my rear lower control arms non-adjustable , new acdelco strut mounts(Auto parts Giants.com) and Koni Reds front/rear, that should stiffen it up a bit. . . thats where im starting anyhow. . .

Oh yeah and more than likely go with UMI type subframe connectors, weld-in if you can. They have the best feedback so far on this entire site. . .

I'm refering to the stiffness of the body as a structure. if you have a stiff body the suspension can do its job better because the body doesn't flex as much.
sphon and hawks have great parts and service from what I hear. if you can fabricate you can make the subframe connectors and wonderbar yourself. thats what I'm doing. its much cheaper.
good tires can also make a world of difference.

Re: Planning On Imporving My Suspension To make It Handle Better Than Stock

You dont have to go broke to make these cars handle great.
my order would be:

#1 subframe connectors
#2 COMPLETE front end rebuild kit. with polly bushings.(a arms, sway bards, etc)
#3 shocks & springs at the same time.
#4 lca's and relocation brackets, panhard bar to adujust the rear back to center from lowering springs.

Some FREE things you could do is Box in your own LCA's and A Arms if yo can weld. Then just get Polly bushings for yours.

You should have NO problem making it handle great. Back in 91/92 one of the Mags did a complete hotchicks suspension package and made a Z handle great in the lateral g department, etc....

If you want ride height adjustment. Do a search on here for CRAZY HAWAIIAN and weight jacks. Id go this way before coil overs for on the street.

Re: Planning On Imporving My Suspension To make It Handle Better Than Stock

There are several threads about this topic. This topic has been covered extensively several times. Here are some that might help-

"Lowering/Making an F-body Handle" (something left out in this thread is the need for SFCs. Get those first. I bought mine after all the mods in my sig with the exception of the front brakes and I still noticed an improvement)

"I want better handling!"

Suspension build from scratch.

Similar thread to yours.

Reading through those should answer any questions you may have.

Couple of things I'll add-
-Tires, tires, tires, mother-frikking tires. Get good ones if you want to handle.
-Shocks, shocks, mothe..... you can figure the rest lol.
-Polyurathane in the rear LCAs is a bad idea for handling. It causes bind when cornering hard.
-There are ways you can adjust the ride height without a coil over kit. It's a kit from Ground Control Store (google it) that runs $460. Allows you to choose spring rates and adjust ride height.
-Brakes- at leat upgrade to performance pads when trying to make the car handle better. Nothing like going to fast for the brakes, making them fade out and plowing around with no brakes- don't ask me how I know.
