k member welding?? advice...

i have a 1989 iroc 5.7

i recently bought the car and i just had the stering gearbox replaced (i could barely drive the car, the steering had a ton of play before it would turn). so i got the play taken care of but they noticed my frame cracked where the gerabox bottom bolt mounts, there is actually a hole in the frame. so when you turn the steering gear moves side to side about 3/4" so the car is all over the road.

i am tight on cash with this economy crap so i am wondering if this can be welded or if not, does anyone know how labor intensive it is to replace or how much i might get charged for labor if i have it replaced?

thanks

so the frame cracked? common problem. It can be welded up, its just sheet metal. Have a welder fix the problem, then get a wonderbar to reinforce the front frame.

i dont know where the hole is, but if its just a crack, it can be filled with weld, if its a hole, a plate needs to be welded over it.

Yes it can be fixed but it would be a good idea to have a frame shop to it so that they can insure that the frame holds to factory spec.

Getting a new tubular k-members not going to fix your frame issue - i read that right? you should post some pics of the damage its a lot easy for us to give you ideas or advice rather then trying to read it, seeing it first hands key. fix the frame first, get a wounder bar (put it on the rack and get an aliment) checking the frame is around $50 its when they have to pull thats where it cost money. if you have basic skills and tools replacing the k-member by your self is easy

Fueled soul is correct the steering box mounts to the front subframe. The best thing to do is for you to post some pictures. Unless it is completely gone a good frame shop can fix it. What it will cost is going to be totally dependant on the shop. After it's fixed definetly get yourself a wonder bar and I would also try and track down a pair of factory K-member braces.
