Preserving the Air dam?

I just replaced my old screwed air dam. I have already touch three times in 5miles. Did anyone tried to modify it, to glue some metal or any other tip?

I know that may be good springs with more correct ride height would be the best solution.

Re: Preserving the Air dam?

its most likely time for new springs and shocks/struts

adding metal will not help, if it hits the ground, its still going to break or bend something.

Re: Preserving the Air dam?

My car is lowered, with Eibach springs. The damping is good too. But the car is close to the ground.
By metal plate I mean if on each touch the contact is on metal, I will let less plastic on the road and the metal is dead I can change it.
Anyone want to trade for upper springs and dampers?

Re: Preserving the Air dam?

You're probably either too low or have ishy shocks up front if you hit it three times on 5 miles of normal road.
I drag the hell out of my air-dam all the time going in and out of places such as drive ways and parking lots and some speed bumps. Been doing it for 3 years. It's not going to wear out fast.

It has been the same thing for me too. It will last a while unless you are literally dragging it. A tap here and there won't do much damage to it.

If you're really concerned... check out the wear strips and wear plates in this link.

Re: Preserving the Air dam?

Thanks for the link, it could be a good solution. But 20$ for 40inches, it is the price of a new air dam ( without shipping). I will see.

Re: Preserving the Air dam?

The air dam will last for YEARS with the occasional driveway scrape. Just go slow into ramped driveways & minimize the amount of scrape they get.

On both my lowered 90 RS & 92 RS, they both did that into steep-ish driveways & road dips....Neither one broke or fell off. Both were fine for years.

Re: Preserving the Air dam?

Yeah, I beat the crap out of my air dam. Before I had shocks/springs, it would drag on a hard stop from highway speeds. Stock height springs and good shocks have eliminated most dragging. It will last awhile.

Re: Preserving the Air dam?

I just made one out of some polished alluminum (like 1/8 thick) i had laying around, do you think the alluminum will be too stiff and not give enough?

Re: Preserving the Air dam?

If I had one made from aluminum, I'd bend it up in about two days. I scrape just about anywhere I park at home except for one spot, and that's mom's.

Re: Preserving the Air dam?

Hmm thats what i was thinking. Well i could keep it on there and see how much it bends, if nothing else i'll have to buy one. Or for shows i could swap on my alluminum one and look purdy lol.

You must only drive on the interstate/highway. And you have a Camaro. Firebirds have no other inlet for air over the rad, other than the air dam.

I have a 87 gta that I got recently and it doesn't have an airdam. It will get hot going down the highway no matter what the temperature is outside. It's fine in town and idling and I have been through the coolant system. Mine blows water for a minute or two when you first start it, but that is condensation in the pipes and it completely dries up after the exhaust heats up so it's not a head gasket I'm pretty sure. I thought about making an airdam out of one I have on a little s10 pickup, but I haven't looked to see how much one for the gta will cost yet.

Re: Preserving the Air dam?

I had mine for 20$ plus shipping brand new. It was way better than the old one which was in bad in shape. With nothin my engine would be already dead.

Re: Preserving the Air dam?

I'd grab an air dam from a junk yard. That'd probably fix the problem with heating on the highway.

Never heard of that. I'll test it next time I'm out and actually manage to get the fans to cut on lol.
