Tire Recommendation Wanted

What brand tire would you recommend for a 1988 IROC? I am using the stock 16 inch wheels and want the new tires to be the original size(245/50 by 16). The car will not be raced or driven in snow. The car will be driven to and from work on occasion so I want a good rain tire that has reasonable tread life. I do not want to spend more than $125-$130 per tire.

Any recommendations?

Re: Tire Recommendation Wanted

Head to tirerack.com do some searching for tires in that size. I did a quick check and the Firestone Firehawk Wide Ovals seem to get good review. Also the Yokohama AVS ES 100 is a solid tire choice as well. If you want something stickier, you could go down to a 245/45/16 and run the Hankook RS-2 although it won't last nearly as long as the other two.

Discount tire direct is also a good place to check and read reviews.

Re: Tire Recommendation Wanted

I've put about 2000 miles on a set of Nitto NT555s (255/285, 17"). They are great. I took them out in the rain and was still able to lay in to the brakes pretty hard at 45mph without losing it. Much better than my Kumho Ecsta ASTs, but those were really cheap.

Re: Tire Recommendation Wanted

I'm running Sumitomo HTRZ tires and so far very happy with them. Drove in the rain they did surprisingly good, much better than my old tires. They're a soft tire though which is a drawback but their price is nice at 72 bucks each for a 245/50/16.

Re: Tire Recommendation Wanted

After much digging and debating, I'm going with the Sumitomo HTR Z III. They don't have it in 245/50R16, but they do have the HTR Z, HRT+, and the HRT H4. LINK!
