Rattle in the left rear!
I have a rattle in the left rear of the car forever now and its driving me INSANE! Someone said it could be the parking brake cable but it doesnt seem that it would be the problem. It only rattles when I hit bumps or rocks. If anyone has had the same problem please let me know what is was.

Re: Rattle in the left rear!
Its probabbly the rear brake pad rattling. try and depress the brake pedal slightly next time you hear it and see if the rattle goes away from just that.
If it disappears when the pedal is pressed, you will need to remove the outside pad and bend the top tabs over the caliper tighter. i use silicone under the tabs to help elimiante rattle.
This is all assuming you have factory rear disk brakes I your 87 IROC. The fronts will do that also with the single piston Delco-Morraine calipers. its an inheret defect in design and is a common noise problem.

have you looked under the car in that area ? ck. the panhard/trac brace bar . it's the one that runs from pass. side of rear axle to drivers side of underbody . good luck .

Pads and cables are usally the problem but if not I had an issue with the fuel filler neck rattling in the tank. The only way to fix this if it is the problem is to drop the tank the rattle is from inside the end of the neck was hitting something I do not remember what but once the tank was dropped and the pump and sending unit removed it was obvious and I was able to fix it with a hammer and punch. Very annoying

Alright. I hope the original poster doesn't mind, but can you give me some details on the filler neck issue? Apparently my gray 87 has this same issue. I can feel the filler neck rattle by shaking it, but the tank seems secure.

Hey Vetruck, is the noise that comes from the front calipers a chirping/squeaking noise? That is the noise that comes form my LF wheel, and it is obviously associated with the wheels rotation, but I can't fiqure out what's causing it.

Re: Rattle in the left rear!
I had an annoying rattle that sounds like your problem. Ended up being the end links. The bushings were pretty much rotted away and the washers were bouncing up and down when I'd hit bumps. Installed new bushings and problem went away.

Re: Rattle in the left rear!
OK, i have figured it out. When someone first said it was the brake pads rattling, my dad said it wasnt them, so i believed him. so today after being under the car for a while, i decided to take a look for my self. and the brake pad is loose. you can stick you finger in there and push it up and down. and just to make sure it was it, i took a look at the other side and that one is really tight. so i thank all of you for your help. one more thing, how should i tighten the brake pad.
