Problem With Shaking
I have an 86 IROC that has a shaking problem. I'm not totally sure if it is the front end or if it is something else. When I get around speeds of 80 mph the car starts to shake. It feels like it might be something in the front end, but what confuses me is that the steering wheel is perfectly fine. The entire car will shake with no shimmy in the steering wheel. I know that it could be a number of problems, but I just need to know what you guys think so I can get an idea of what I'm working with. Thanks

Re: Problem With Shaking
I have the same problem but at 60mph. It still handles perfectly up at higher speeds but shakes. I have gotten all new and balanced wheels and the problem still remains. I think it could be an unbalanced drive shaft, but if that's not it I have no idea.

Re: Problem With Shaking
Off hand, I would guess tires are out of balance. Somewhere I have seen a small bar chart that had the correlation between the speeds at which the vibrations occured and their likely cause. I don't know if I have it buried somewhere or not. If anyone has that, post it up.

Re: Problem With Shaking
Thats what I thought at first, but usually balance issues produce a shaking in the wheel. There is no abnormal tire wear aound the tire edges either.

When was the last time the driveshaft was balanced?

20 yer old bent rims, they don't check rim run out unless ya ask, even then miss it.
had it on my wagon, all new brake stuff, then 4 new tires. Go back when it still was funny and they then saw my rims were bent. After mounting n balacing 4 new tires.

Re: Problem With Shaking
balance will not cause tire wear on the edges, allignment causes that. run your hand over the tread and see if it feels like rubber waves. if it does, its balancing.

Re: Problem With Shaking
There are a number of things that can cause shaking. You should check all your sway bar bushings, wheel bearings and like other posts said, wheel balance. Most common is sway bar bushing going bad or rotted out. Ive fixed 100's of shaking problems in 3rd gens by replacing sway bar bushings. Good Luck!!!!
