I am swaping out my motor for an Lt1 and was just trying to see if I could use the whole front suspension out of the 4th gen to put in my 3rd gen. also wanna make sure that the rear end will bolt in??

 

The rear end will bolt in people do it all the time. The front is rack and pinion steering and different from a 3rd gen.

 

The rear will bolt in, it's just wider than the 3rd gen rear so you wont be able to run 3rd gen wheels, you will have to run the 4th gen wheel or ones with similar offset. If you have an 82-83 car the brake line fitting for the rear is different, but 84 and up hooks right up.

As for the front suspension I dont know for a fact, but I am going to say no. Or at least not without alot of modification because the spring/strut are one component on a 4th gen where the 3rd gen the shock and spring are seperate. The lower control arms are different. I'd guess the only way to make it possible would be swap the whole K member in. Don't know if that's possible.

 

There would be much fabrication requied to use 4th gen front suspension, too much work and not much to gain, IMO.

 

AFAIK the only problems with the wider rear (and stock wheels and tires) is that some people think it looks bad.

 

WRONG. I can't believe how often this totally inaccurate information keeps getting passed around.

Stock 3rd gen wheels SIT out further, but do not STICK out. They are still under the fender. Blue Camaro, 4th gen rear end, stock 16" wheels.





I've never heard anyone say it looks bad, except the ones that do not understand & assume things incorrectly.

 

has any one had problems with the tires rubbing on hard turns or hard bumps.its doin it on mine bad and i used the stock 3rd gen springs but i put a set of kyb gr2 shocks on the back.

 

yea I have 20 inch rims in the back and it was rubbing, I solved it by cutting the part of the body that folds in the wheel well... I would suggest you have someone do that for you if that was your problem.

 

My deepest apologies. As I do not have personal experience, I have heard/read of people having issues with the tires hitting the fender lip when you hit bump or turn at times, even more so being a problem if the car is lowered.

 

That comes from how a stock panhard bar works.

Since it swings in an arc, as the suspension goes up or down, it shifts left to right some. As a car gets lowered, the center of that arc gets "pushed" to one side, making one side even closer than before.

At stock height & good bushings, my rear axle was off by almost a full inch. Am adjustable PHB fixed that.

 

Yea, when I lowered my 4th gen, life SUCKED until I got my Adj PHB.

 

well my car isnt lowered and i have the stock z28 wheels on it. the only thing thats not stock is the adj. torque arm. and as far as a adj. phb goes im not sure how it wuld solve the problem if the only difference between a 3rd and 4th gen rear is the width as far as i know.

 

Is the 4th gen extra width outside or inside the PHB mount? If it is inside the mount, I could see the adjustable PHB a MUST.

 

Interesting question. I might have to take a measurement from the pan hard mount to the inside of the axle flange.

 

If you run stock 3rd gen wheels I agree for the most part; the 8" wide stock 3rd gen wheel appearance is subjective, the 7" wide wheels look fine. However, if you run a wider wheel (intended for 3rd gens than switch rear ends) it looks bad and does stick out a lot. Skateboard look to be exact.

 

Really? My 11" ones (on the stock 9-bolt) "stick out a lot"?

 

He meant with a 4th gen rear, not a 9-bolt. I'm sure those 11" wide wheels have more than stock BS.

My 2000 Z28 sure didn't have coil-overs from the factory. Separate springs and struts and I sold them to a 3rdGen owner when I replaced the factory stuff with some Eibachs/Strano-Bilstiens. The K-member and A-arms, I'm not sure about...

 

Went to a yard sale where there was a smashed up 98 Camaro RS. Will that rear fit our 3rd gen cars? I did a google search and found some site that said only 93-97 4th gen rears would work in 3rd gen's. Anyone confirm this? Should it have the 342's still, & does it matter if it was 5 speed or auto? Looked like a good set up. Still had the calipers and all. Bet I could pull it myself, and get it for about $100. Im not sure of the motor size since it was gone.

4th gen front suspension? You might as well just sell your 3rd gen and vuy a 4th gen if that is what you want.
The 3rd gen is a front strut platform, I will not even begin to deal with the troubles you will have to overcome modifying one into a 4th gen double arm setup.

4th gen rear suspension? Basically the same other than the axle is wider from mount face to mount face of the wheels. larger is heavier= more unsprung weight=bad.
