They look like an exact copy of the J&M Hotpart ones.

only difference i see is the hotpart ones have stainless bolts for the adjustable bearing, and the mounting plate on the hotpart ones are 5/16, a hair heavier. Along with the lifetime warranty.

Re: UMI Spherical Caster/Camber Plates!!

Hello Everyone,

Yes we are now offering the caster and camber plates.

We can offer you a lifetime warranty on the bearing as well. The bearing inside is a USA made spherical bearing with a self lubricating Teflon lining. If you wear it out we will replace it

We did build ours from 1/4" thick, I feel 5/16" is just unnecessary weight. We do offer thicker retainers on the bottom, others use 1/8" thick with low grade hardware and we use 3/16" thick with 10.9 hardware. We actually snapped a competitors hardware awhile back installing a set for a customer. Also our tubing is DOM and others use ERW.

If anyone has any questions please ask. Thank you!
Ryan

snapped a bolt during an install? wow! how tight did it get tq'd??

J&Ms have a lifetime warrenty on the whole part, not just the bearing.

The nut was just starting to apply pressure when it snapped on us.

Out of curiosity why does J&M offer a lifetime warranty on this item only and no other item? We offer a 2 year warranty on all our products and have always cured an issue if one has came up. We can offer a limited lifetime warranty as well... as you can see we do not have any worries regarding our product.

Thank you,
Ryan

Must have been defective? You should be able to torque even grade 0 hardware to specs.

Re: UMI Spherical Caster/Camber Plates!!

These guys are going on the buy list. You get the mount AND new retainers. Spohn was the only other company to make retainers and they wanted $40 for them in addition to the mounts. Definitely a deal sealer for me. They cost the same as the J&M part and come with the retainers. All around, I think that this is my spring break fun time right here.

Please don't be misleading on your competition. All of our parts come with a lifetime warranty including all of our poly bushings. The only thing that does not have a lifetime warranty is the spherical rod ends on our race panhard rods and race lower control arms.

Our mounts do and always have come with the lower bolt retainers. The cost is also not the same with the UMI parts coming in about $60+ more expensive.

I apologize...I was unaware of this, I only saw a warranty listed on this product.

Brad measured the total height with the bearing installed, I was supplying the inside travel. The post is corrected to reflect this.

More competition = buyers win.

I've always thought these things were too expensive (I'm cheap).
$152.25 sounds perfect!

Exactly, we can only hope hotpart starts ripping off UMI's K-members so I can afford one.

...At least it wasn't the Chinese companies...yet.

This isn't the 1st time I've seen UMI sales p!ssing on competitors hardware. Not cool, especially if you consider that most their items are simply copies of what others have some up with. I'm going to get a set of these for my TA since they works wonders on my camaro. I'm going to get yours again J&M, i have them on the camaro too.

Man I am old I rmember when J&M was just some guy posting on here that had come up with thes new strut mounts. I was in college and broke and wanted some real bad and he was doing his first group buy. I almost started giving blood :-) just to get a pair. No shot to UMI, but J&M is Thirdgen.org born, something to think about.

I may of mispoke, It was 8 years ago. Is J&M the same as Hunter motorsports?

J&M is NOT Hunter Motorsports. However, J&M is not a copy cat of Hunter either. THey came up with their own innovative design separating the camber from the caster settings. The innovator of all of this is Ground Control with an insert peice that just modified the factory strut into a soild bearing strut. Then Hunter Motorsports made a design (Which I owned) that was innovative but proved to be not sufficiant in durability since the units were aluminum. THey looked great, but in my case with a very modified hard cornering car the loads applied nto the bearing pressed it against the steel retainer clip and weakened the aluminum base groove causing a severe knock and unwanted slop in the bearing retention. Spohn then came out with a stee version since Hunter was not really a company in business to maufacturer these things- Hunter was a racer that had fabrication skills and built some forhimself and asked everyone else if anyone wanted to get into a group purchase then he would just built 20 sets. I jumped all over that about close to 10 years ago.

Hotparts then come out with their original design which ran into clearance issues so they started shimming the plates off the towers with spacers, eventually came this better design which was now copied by Umi. Racecraft incorporated the same basic pricipals but at least had the decency to try and make it look unique (which I commend since there is not alot you can change in function whiile still creating your own entire look- Racecraft did such honorably in my book.)

And thats pretty much the history of the strut mounts you see in existance today- Think I am going to give my ideas? Hell no. I have two top ssecret designes with very different functions from shat you have seen from anybody. Not hard to be innovative when you posses the skills and knowledge of suspensions rather than simply being a blind copycat not understanding vehicle dynamics but just making parts simply because you have metal skills and no knowledge on how they mostly function until you get schooled by hard knocks. Its American, anyone can do what they want, but I certainly try to live my life giving credit where credit is do- If I went after the buck, I would buy chinesse like this country has pretty much sold out to and cause our great current depression. Where has quality and intergrity gone? A few still have it and they get my money.

Re: UMI Spherical Caster/Camber Plates!!

Sorry this may be a dumb question, but what is the advantage using these vice stock replacements? Don't either one hold the strut stable?

Also, are these built for lowered cars or can they also be used with stock height suspension?

stock mounts have a rubber bushing/bearing that deflects under load. The aftermarket ones, Spohn, J+M, UMI, Racecraft, ect, all use a spherical bearing so there is no deflection. Plus they offer more adjustability of camber/caster

Ahhh OK - So I can understand where the lack of deflection would be a plus in Autocrossing or something like that. Seems like they're for lowered cars for better handling then.

Would the camber/caster settings be altered from stock settings for that type of driving?

which are the ones that are taller for lowered cars? my car is dropped 1.75" and i need the plates that are tall.. i remember seeing someone had them on the car and had a picture posted but now i cant find it (for reference), anyone know what ones those are? i think they were like 2" or 1.5" taller and were black in color.

if i remember correctly both umi and j&m's have a 1" more travel for the strut which is exactly why i want a set since my car is lower 2" or so, plus they are probably wore. plus the extra thickness in the mounts should help me clear my slp runners when using a umi strut bar.
