What brand of brake pad will not leave large amounts of dust on rims?
Hey guys...I replaced my rotors/pads awhile back and ever sence I have had a problem with large amounts of brake pad material building up on my front rims. When i first bought the car the pads that where on there never did this. The ones i bought are from onestop-auto they are Semi metallic. IM thinking of changing them out.
What brand should I get?

I've got the Performance Friction ones on the front from Autozone and a copper-metallic on the rear I got from O'Reilly. The Autozone ones don't leave hardly any brake dust whereas the rears do, plus they start to squeak from the dust a few days after washing it. Hope this helps.

Thanks Jay...Are those the carbon metalic ones you got from Autozone? There is a new Autozone near me that Ive been wanting to checkout. How do you like the performance of them?
My rears are fine very little dust at all.

Carbon Metalic pads will dust your wheels up pretty good. It's just the price you have pay for some improved braking.
Here is some info I just recently got from a board member about Performance Friction's carbon metallic pads. Sounds pretty nasty to me, it's making me doubt using them:
QUOTE: "My experience with the Performance Friction carbon metallic pads was very
bad. This was before the Baer brake upgrades. First, car wheels were always
coated heavily with black dust. Then about 15k miles into the set of pads,
the pads started breaking down. As I went about 2 weeks without washing the
car, car looked so dirty I had to clean it. What I found was that the pads'
binder material was disintegrating and as it came of the pads, the hot
particles had permanently deposited themselves on the clearcoat of the rims,
AND ON THE REAR QUARTER PANELS OF THE CAR! The black buildup on the rims
was very hard and wouldn't come off. I tried every wheel cleaner & polish
that I could, including things like gasoline, penetrating oil, carb cleaner
etc... Bottom line- wheel finish was ruined. I also worked the car's rear
quarter panels, and the clearcoat was definitely screwed up."

This was via e-mail, I want to find out if these were old formula pads, or if the newest ones do the same thing.

Tom, I'll try to locate a couple of photos of the wheels at their worst. Even today, there are areas in the grooves of the 92Z rims that still have the extremely hard, thick and rough black brake material caked onto the rims. It'll tear up a knife blade trying to scrape or pick it off. I know I've got a ton of hours spent cleaning up the rims. About the only thing that really helped was Tri-chorethylene, but it instantly removed the clearcoat. Rims are still sitting in my garage.
I believe I mentioned, this was a hand full of years ago, and at the time I had seen and heard of others that had the same experience. I will readily admit that I haven't heard any more of this in a while.

WOW...Kevin did you ever contact the makers of the pads about what happened?
Any Semi metalic pad would do as long as it didnt dust the rims so much.

Hey Mike, yes, I did talk to Perf Friction. The guy I spoke with indicated that under extreme conditions heavy hot deposits could "spray" on to the rims. He was talking more in racing applications. When I talked about how it had screwed the finish up on my rims, he just mentioned several brands of wheel cleaners and said he'd never seen it as bad as I had described. For the longest time, I had the notes from that call in the PF box with the pads. Somewhere in the garage.
Bottom line, after the call, I just spent my own time working on the rims. I knew I was going to go to 17" later, so I just got the rims cleaned as much as I could.
As I had further indicated in my e-mail to Tom, if someone does go with the carbon metallic type pads, be extremely careful of hard braking in traffic when the brakes are cool, as in first stop after a long drive at speed in cooler temps. THe carbon metallic pads work better & better as they get hotter. But the first stop cold performace leaves something to be desired.
Otherwise, those that have the Baer or 1LE PBR front calipers, and the cast aluminum PBR rears can use the high metallic PBR pads for a good combination of good stopping hot or cold, long wear, quiet operation & low/med dust. They're available through Chevy & Ford dealers, as well as Baer & others.

I have the PBR rear calipers so I could use the ones you suggested on the rear. In time I plan to either upgrade to 1LE fronts or Baers kit. The 12" rotors and PBR calipers should have come stock on all F-bodys.
I wonder if organic pads wouldnt work the best for a street car. Seems like they would have alot of cold stopping power.

I have been using performance friction for some time now. Haven't seen anything like what u guys described earlier. They work great as they get hot but suck when cold. No residue or brake dust either.

Thanks Rob...Now that you mention them I remember hearing about those. I will have to check them out if they stop good as well they sound like what im looking for.

Yep, it appears the Raybestos ceramics are the way to go. I know of a supplier that has several municipalities (police forces) using them with the Raybestos Brute Stop rotors with excellent wear, low dusting, and low noise. I think they are the Quiet Stop line. They aren't cheap, though.
As far as using organics, if the car did not originally come with them, definitely don't . The organics are designed to work at a MUCH lower operating temperature than mets or semi-mets. If the braking system is not designed for the organic pads, they will probably burn up pronto.

According 2 a test that Chevy High Performance did PFs "Carbon Metallic" pads r 4 customers looking 4 long wear, good rotor compatibility, and increased fade resistance over stock pads. They will however, produce more dust that stock pads. PFs Z-rated pads r the highest friction pads availible 4 street cars from PF. They provide a consistent, fade-resistant pedal but require heat 2 work best and will make even more dust than the "Carbon Metallics".
I'm looking in2 getting pads from HAWK. CHP says they r a less familiar name, but is very well-known and respected on the track. Of their street pads, the HPS compound offers extremely low dust with high friction. The HP Plus is a race worthy street pad that offers very high brake torque without excessive rotor wear. www.hawkbrake.com
