Tie rod ends too long?
Tie rod ends too long?
Well I decided to redo my entire front end this year. This includes a racecraft tubular K-member, adjustable tubular A-arms, coil overs, and all new moog steering components.
My problem is that the passenger side tire is still has toe out while the tie rod is buried and cannot get any shorter.
Can I cut the threads on the tie rods to make them shorter? or should I wait and take it to an alignment shop and have them look at it first?

Re: Tie rod ends too long?
is there still adjustment on the driverside tie rods? you can take some length from that side to make more on the other.
if not, you can grind the rods down a little. how much are we talking here

Re: Tie rod ends too long?
Im no alignment tech so I am not sure how much too long it is, but I would say that it is a good 1/4" or so maybe a little more.
Wouldnt taking length from the oppisite side make my steering wheel off center?
Could my problem come from the adjustable A-arms being set too short?

Re: Tie rod ends too long?
im in the same predicament as u.
i had the car setup perfectly then i got in an accident, slid into a curb and destroyed my rear end, rear wheel, rear LCA and front rim. which bent my front brake rotor and crushed my wheel bearings into dust. i went ahead and replaced everything, found a stock spindal. stock Aarm, replaced the rotors and the whole rear etc. i went to put the car down on the ground and the pass wheel was sticking out a bunch. some reason my edlebrock tie rod adjusters were frozen on the pass side so i replaced the tie rod adjusters with UMI pieces (much longer than the edlebrocks and could be the problem)
so i started adjusting the tie rod to bring the wheel in, i got the adjuster MAXed out and the wheel is still sticking out. i need a min of 1/2" on the tie rod but im out of thread. All the tie rods are moog replacments. I cant figure it out... i just got back from the alignment shop and heres my specs.
right front pass side wheel (accident side)
-0.15degrees toe out (red zone=bad)
left front driver side wheel
0.05degrees toe in (green zone=good)
total toe is -0.10degrees, its in the green zone
what the hell! the only thing i can think of is that i bent the center link... but it doesnt look bent, pitman and idler arm look ok. i do have alittle slop in the steering box tho that i didnt have before. they said i would have to turn the wheel and adjust the tie rods to center the wheel, then take off the steering wheel off and recenter it. im like bull$hit! i gotta figure this out. seems like we got the same issue

Re: Tie rod ends too long?
i dont see the issue? i still have a set of UMI's from the first batch made and all i had to do was grid a hair of the nub off the end of the moog tie rod ends. No issues with the body of the adjuster being too long and running out of threads, more of the tie rods themselves being too long
