Slight Gear Whine, what options do I have?

I recently swapped in an entire '92 rear-end into my "84, but before doing so I replaced the pinion shaft seal. I do not know the history of this rear-end because I got it out of the wrecking yard. I do know that it had been opened up but I did not see any wear patterns on the gear teeth so I assumed it would be in decent shape. Now when I drive the car, any time I am accelerating I hear a very slight amount of gear whine. I have been told that it is because I did not replace the crush sleeve along with the seal, is this true? I was also told that when this happens and you continue to drive the car your chances of ever getting rid of the whine are not good with-out replacing the gears. I am not afraid of changing the gears but I also do not wish to do anything more than is necessary.

So, do I replace just the crush sleeve; the sleeve and the bearings; or the sleeve, bearings and gears?

Any in-put would very much be appreciated!

james

you should replace the nut to the exact place it came from. measure the depth, or scribe a line to match up. sounds like you ddin't get it tight enough when you put it back on.

EDE, I pretty much figured that out after the fact, now I just want to know to what extent I will need to go to correct/eliminate the noise.

thanks, james

well if you want to do it correctly you need to remove the axles and carrier. remove the pinion gear and replace the crush sleeve and reinstall the pinion. use a new pinion nut and tighten it untill you get the correct preload on the pinion bearings. i'll say 20 inch pounds for used bearings with out looking in my manual. put the carrier and axles back in, bolt up the cover, add posi additive ,if it's posi, and gear lube. i use mobil 1 gear lube.
