Shaking at 85mph?
I have a 1988 GTA with 30,000 miles on it, along with the original tires. Whenver I go 85mph or higher the car shakes. The whole dash shakes and the sunvisor falls down also. The tires are about shot and I'm getting some new Goodyear Eagle HP 245/50/16 with a four wheel alignment and the tires balanced, will that take that shake away? Thanks to all who reply.

What ?!? LOL If your car shakes at 80 mph it's certainly NOT because GM designed it that way. lol

The stock drive shafts have the history of shaking like a wet dog in the arctic at speeds around 70-80 and up. I say who cares! I'm usually not going that fast anyways.

Should you discover that the drive shaft is causing the problem and wish to up-grade, I have two thirdgen alum shafts. See my ad in the classifieds.

Mine did that shake. The front tires were out of round.

the vibration is undoubtedly due to a tire with a broken belt. Later!

Does the shaking only do it at 85 mph or all the time? And does the steering wheel shake? If the steering wheel shakes, then it's a bad balance on one or both of the front tires, not a broken belt in the tire. If there was a broken belt then you would be hearing a thumping noise and you'd be shaking at all speeds. Good luck!

Check the idler arm or replace it . This item will cause shaking of the front and steering wheel when it wears out. My was a recent replacement but unknowlingly the grease fitting fell out and I was getting the shakes..

Check the sway bar links, especially in the rear. They tend to break pretty easily. My car did the same thing and after i replace my sway bar link in the rear (one was missing) the car drives smooth at 110 mph.

Check the tires first. I have a checklist for vebrations that I got out of a magazine once. Numerous things can cause bad vibes. No use spending all your money when it can be fixed easily. I had a similar problem and I was thinking of doing all the things already posted. Instead, I started by checking to make sure all the bolts and fasteners were tight and went from there. It ended up that all I needed was a tire balancing. But don't tell my wife, I used it as an excuse to get new springs (she knows nothing about cars).

The tires were just shot and that's what the problem was. I put on 4 new goodyear hp 245/50/16 with a four wheel alignment and balance. I coudn't beleive how much smoother it rode at high speeds. The other tires were so shot that with these new tires i think i knocked off a half sec. in the quater. lol.

i had the same thing happen to me. someone refered to it as the "death wobble". they said that it was the driveshaft being unbalenced. i changed the tires on my vehicle and it took the shakes away without having to change the shaft
