Spohn K member and A arms installation review.

I just got my Spohn K-member and A-arms installed last weekend and I thought I'd share my experiences with you guys. I got the k-member with spring pockets and mounts for the k-member braces. The a-arms are the del-sphere jointed arms with spring pockets. First of all some pics.

Re: Spohn K member and A arms installation review.

The k-member installed pretty easily. The holes all lined up nicely. The only problem I ran into was the passenger side k-member brace mount. The inside corner made contact with the stock oil cooler lines and prevented the k-member from fully installing. I was able to trim off the corner with a dremel and all fits well now. I imagine Spohn didn't have an oil cooler equipt car when they were designing this thing. No big deal. Its amazing how much room there is both for engine maintenance and exhaust and oil pan clearance.

The a-arms were also fairly easy to install. The only problem I ran into was the bushings were not as wide as the flanges on the k-member. They are about 1/8" narrower. I'm not sure whether it was the k-member or the a-arms that were off. When the bolts were tightened the k-member would bend enough to take up the 1/8" but I am not comfortable with that, as the k-member was bending on a welded joint. So instead I added some hardened washers to take up the gap. It should work out fine.

I'll add some pics of the spacers later.

You get the weight jacks from Spohn too?

Re: Spohn K member and A arms installation review.

Oh, one more thing to add. I found that the cotter pin holes in the ball joints were drilled to high. I had to shim the castle nut up with 2 hardened washers on the passenger side and one on the drivers side. I don't think this is a big deal, but its something to keep an eye on.

Now for the difference between the driver and passenger side. I measured the spindles and found that the spindle on the drivers side was 0.10" ticker than the passenger side at the ball joint stud hole. These spindles are part of an ebmiller brake kit. I measured my old spindles and found both to be the thicker version. I'm guess at some point from 82-92 GM either thickened or thinned the spindles and this area and probably just retained the part number. Either way I'm not to worried about it.

I'm going completely off topic, but what camera do you use? The color in them pictures was pretty amazing, like watching HDTV, because I'm used to my cheap digital camera from like 2006.

Thanks Shadow. Photography is another hobby of mine. I use a Nikon D40. Its digital SLR camera. Pretty bulky but the image quality is worth it. One tip, avoid using flash if you can help it. It has a tendency to wash out colors.

This may be a bit challenging. You will need to be careful that the springs don't pop out of the a-arms when you are lowering them. It was not very time consuming to take the a-arms out of the k-member first.

They are Wilwood FSL calipers. Part of Ed Miller's Wilwood kit.
