Steel Brake Line- How hard to replace?
Steel Brake Line- How hard to replace?
Moving my car today, I found that I had virtually no brakes. Looked all the way around and found the steel line from the master cylinder to the right front caliper is broken. Can this be changed with the engine still in the car? Also, will the steel line from any 3rd gen work, or only certain years? The car is an 82 Camaro SC. I have access to a line from an 84 Z28, but I don't know if it will work. What could have caused this? Would a tire rubbing do it? I have 15" wheels on the car, OEM was 14" IIRC.
i wouldn't try to run the new line under the engine, too much work. see if you can't run it across the firewall or any where easy to get to and work with.

82-83 Firebirds & Camaros used non-metric, SAE (standard) threaded fittings. 84-up used metric fittings with the ISO "bubble" flare.
So, no, an 84 brake line won't be a "direct" bolt-in. While it might follow the same routing as the original, you'd have to find adapters for the ends. Some shops carry them, some don't- it'll be one heck of a hunt.

Well ya know I had the same problem just a couple months ago.Right front brake line broke. No autoparts store I know of sells a prebent line. They sell different lengths with fittings on them and you bend them yourself. What I did was buy a set of front lines from classic tube [they have a website].These were prebent and included the rock guard on the line. Now to get rhe line on I had to drop the exhaust Y pipe and do alot of cussing to fanagle that line up under the engine but got it done.
