My 1LE brake upgrade!

Many of you have seen my too frequent posts obout my 1LE brake upgrade. I must tell everyone that the improvement in braking is very dramatic. I was a passenger in my own car, and it scared the hell out of me.As my step son drove, with full confidence that we would "just stop". No kidding. If anyone doubts this. I invite you all to test drive my car. It is just TOO COOL!

I have to back that up! I just took my car out on the road and hammered on my new 1LE front and 97 T/A rear discs. This thing stops like an animal now!

I don't dubt you one bit! I have had my own encounter with are cheep stock calipers giving out to brake fade. I was out in the back roads with some of my freinds and there 3rd gen cars and after a few good roads and high speeds they started getting bad like can I even stop bad! I just recently got the calipers and the brackets I can hardely wait.

Andy,

The description of your '82 "Z" reads like that of my '83 'Bird. Sadly, I do not yet have a "real" rear end nor "real" brakes but someday I hope to.

Your info on the 1LE upgrade is an, ahem, inspiration to us all.

Makes one wonder how many owners could have avoided collisions (or "tense situations" as Harry Dean Stanton said in "Repo Man") IF GM had put 1LE-caliber brakes in every "hi-po" variant of the third generation F-body. They might have even sold more cars if they had!

Would this still be possible using Belltech drop spindles? Would the modification be any different? Thanks!

I'm sure it is possible to mod aftermarket spindles to the 1LE spec. But I do not know of it being done yet. Members???

Andy, I dont know about the drop spindle question, but I think it could be done. The sropped spindles were not offered as 1LE-specific because they wouldn't fit 1LE brakes "as-is" without modification. No one wants the liability of saying "just hack off the ears of our product and you'll be okay".

By the way Andy, I ordered some 1LE brackets the other day.... We going to build a killer do-it-yourself brake page together?? I have server space, and my current 1LE page is looking rather old...

Once I get some money together after buying an IROC, i'm going to do the drop spindle 1LE brake upgrade and tell ya how it comes out. I'll take some pics if it end up being different, its gonna be a while, so if anyone else wants to take a stab at it, be my guest! Thanks guys!

NextGen parts offers a complete front 1LE upgrade kit for 3rd gens. It is made by SSBC and they want $995.00 for it but I called NextGen and they said it includes EVERYTHING you need for the conversion. Calipers, spindles, pads, hoses, hardware, etc. Everything you need in a DIY kit. I went to SSBC's website www.ssbrakes.com and they actually want more for it from them directly. Like $1,195.00 Just some info I thought you might like to know.

Car is dead stock. Has only standard Z28 power options and all the IROC performance stuff you could get. No pwr. seats, mirrors, or rear defrost.

The reason SSBC charges more is because they don't ask for your old spindles, Next Generation will charge you a CORE fee if you don't send back your old ones, just an FYI...

If someone can send me 1 Third gen drop spindle to examine. I will determine if it can be modified to the 1LE spec.

Andy, I can't thank you enough for the heads up about the GM parts shortage. You'll notice the other posts out there about guys not finding what they need. Needless to say, I'm relieved...again, thanks..I owe you a beer.
