How do you remove the rear disc calipers?!?

Hey all,
I will be installing new calipers and rotors on the rear of my 84 'bird. I can't get to one of the bolts to take the calipers off. Am I going to have to drop the front end? I will need a 7mm or 10mm hex head tool to remove them, correct? Also, what else will I need to do to get them to cunction correctly? I will need to bleed the brakes, right? How exactly is this done on this car? The car is an 84 Firebird S/E with rear disc brakes BTW

Thanks,

Chris

Chris, did you see my "recall info" response to your message on the tech board? Here's the link: https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/009233.html

I used the same hex head socket for my rear calipers as the one I use for the fronts... if that helps. If you have a manual transmission and qualify for the recall, have GM do it. If you don't, you can check out that link I put on the tech board for the recall part # info, and pick up a Haynes 82-92 Firebird manual. They show a pic-by-pic rebuild of the rear calipers, and tell you how to bleed them, too.

(Hint- replace the back body-to-axle and right-rear-caliper brake hoses while you're at it!!! Now's a great time, those hoses are too old.)

TomP, thanks for the recall info. I called and the service guy says that there is no recall, just a service bulletin (I feel like I've typed that somewhere before....)

Well, there is a TSB that details the work to be done, but I'm pretty sure about the recall. The recall is only for 4-wheel-disc f-bodies with the MANUAL trans... guys with the Automatics get nothing for free, except the TSB info.

Call another dealership...

That fits me to a tee. I have an 84 Firebird S/E 6 cyl, 5 speed, 4wheel disc. The guy was very helpful, but had no idea what I was talking about. Do you have a number that I can reference about the recall? I will contact another dealership this week.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris, GMTech did us a favor and looked up the exact recall info back in January. Here's the link to his message:

If I have a 9-bolt rear-end from an 86 car, will GM fix it for me under the recall? Its in a 92 RS.

I seriously doubt GM would fix something for free on your car that was not originally installed on it.

I called another dealer and he said that he had no idea what I was talking about. Is there some kind of a number that I can use to reference this by?

If you have a manual transmission, it'll be covered under Safety Campaign 86C28. If you have an automatic, it's under service bulletin 88-450-5.

And the Safety campaign should get my brakes fixed for free, correct? I do have a manual tranny, J65 firebird.

Thanks so much for your help, you have no idea how big of a relief this is to me.

As long as your car originally had both rear discs and a manual transmission.
