How do you guys get traction?

I have an 89 IROC w/ 350 TPI, 700R4, 2.77 gears w/ posi and stock TQ converter. I want to know how you guys get traction, especially you guys w/ over 400+ HP and tons of TQ. My engine is basically stock w/ full exhaust, cold-air induction, ported plenum, roller rockers, pulleys, and a chip. That's about it and I sit and spin the tires for around 2-3 full seconds. So how do you guys w/ a lot of power, 3.45-4.11 gears and a 2400 stall converter get any traction?

When you find out, let me know. I have over 400 ft/lbs to the wheels, and every suspension upgrade except springs/shocks and a torque arm, and I can still spin the tires thru first and second gear. My 60 foots suck!

Tire choice. All the suspension modifications in the world can't help if you can't get the power to the ground.

Z rated street tires are very hard. They're designed for high speed without heating up. They're not designed for straight line accelleration.

A racing tire can be anything from a full slick to something like nitto's or MT drag radials. They are made from soft rubber that will heat up and get sticky. The downside to this traction is that the tires don't last very long.

A street tire can have a life expectency of 50,000 miles while a DOT slick may only be 3,000.

You'll have to ask yourself what you need. A long life tire or very good traction at the cost of replacing tires regularly.

My last set of slicks lasted 2 seasons and they see no street use. I'm hoping to get that out of my new set but I don't expect it.

Don't launch so hard(a little less throttle). LCA relocation brackets helped my launch.

Now when you say "don't launch so hard", do you mean you just gas the car a partial throttle to gain traction, and once you are in motion, mash the petal to the floor?

I know the TPS has to be practily mashed to the floor to get it to send the 4 volts required to the ECU so it knows to max out your cars acceleration.

Am i on the right track with what im saying? Just partial throttle untill you are in motion, then jam your petal down to get maximum acceleration once your tires have traction?

Hey, every tip counts, and i know i don't know every trick when it comes to 'performance' driving.

What I find works best is to "roll" into the gas, hit the gas fairly hard to get a good take off and steadily give it more gas.
usually, in a well tuned car (like yours) a quick throttle stab will send your tires smoking, even if you start with a bit of forward motion. Rolling into the gas give the tires more of a chance to stay hooked to pavement.

not that im an expert or anything, just what I have found that works

good luck.

My IROC is making somewhere around 450-500ft/lbs. With all these gobs of torque my tires spin like CRAZY 1st gear, 2nd gear, and even into third gear. When you figure out how to get power like that to the pavement please let me know. Mind you even without traction in a 1/4 mile or greater distance it doesn't matter you still end up spanking most cars like a $2 Hooker
