Guys with lowered cars - Do you bottom out a lot?

Hey guys,

I bought this parts car and it has KYB gas shocks all arounds and lowering springs (not cut) I am thinking of putting this on my TA. The drop is about 1 1/2 - 2 inches, I'm not sure, anyways would I bottom out too much with a car that low.

As a side note, what useful components could I take out of the parts car (WS6 level 3) and put on my non-WS6 TA besides the swaybars?

Thanks for the help,
-Max

I don't bottom out too much in my car.The springs are stiffer and keep the car from dipping so low.As far as the parts car,I think the rear control arms are reinforced if I'm not mistaken. You may also want to look at the steering box.

RSpeed has my car's twin almost. I have the Pro-Kit instead of the Sportline springs though. I bottom out LESS than before I lowered the car because of the springs' increased stiffness.

I only really have to look out for steep driveways, and dippy intersections. I haven't encountered a speedbump yet that's been a problem.

Thanks for the responses,

I think I'll put the springs in (and look up the brand while I'm at it), the only problem is there are speed bumps at my school lot that are medium height. Will I go over them alright? What did you mean by the sterring box? Is that the box where the stering column connects to the front axle?

Sorry but I am a beginner when it comes to suspension.

You will scrape the front air deflector on certain speed bumps and driveways. The air deflector is the plastic strip that directs air to your radiator. I live in NY, so the roads are not as smooth as some of you are used to, but I never bottom out....

Suspension Techniques Sway Bars, Globel West Wonderbar, Poly everything bushings, Metco LCA's, Lakewood Panhad Rod. 16" ROH, with Toyo 245's. For autocross, 16" IROC's w/bfg R1's... Nothing easy can be fun...

Yeah, he means grab that steering box, as it's probably better than the one you have now.

And as far as scraping the air dam, yeah you'll do that a lot, but even the 2000s at stock ride height scrape theirs. Mine's been scraping it's air dam for 12 years, and it's still there and in one piece (surprisingly considering GMs reputation when it comes to the durability of their plastic parts).

You car shouldnt bottom out. Considering you also have performance shocks/struts. Cause my car with a 2" drop and dead struts/shocks didnt bottom out. But then the springs settled and ended up dropping my car 3". And then my suspension was bottomed out! Even with no one in the car it was bottomed out!

Ok thanks for the advice,

I decided I'm goign to lower it for sure, anyways roday I took out the entire rear suspension and axle. I have a posi 2.77 with drums (did those crappy gears and crappy drums come in WS6), decent condition springs (can't tell the brand), totally dead rear shocks (only fronts were KYB's apparently), and a very nice aluminum driveshaft (did those ever come stock in 3rd gens?).

My first question is there any way I can attach my rear disk brakes to the posi rear axle (which came with drums) and would they just bolt on?

My second question is which pieces are the control arms? Are they on both the front and back? What other parts of the rear suspension might be useful to me?

My deflecor is NEVER going to come off, after it was dragging on the ground for a while after I bought the car, I reinforced it with a metal rod and bolted it in real good so I am not worried about it falling off again. To 86SCBNJ, you haven't spent much time on Bergen County roads, they are hell compared to most roads in Manhattan or Brooklyn.

BTW Is KYB the best brand of shocks for me? And approx how much would it cost for 2 rear KYB shocks?

Another thing, the lowering spring coils are closer together on top and more spread out on bottom, could thsi mean that its a regular spring that was heat shrinked?

The springs are like that because they are progressive rate springs. I could try to explain what that means but I would probably just end up confusing you. Someone else can probably explain it much better than me. Rear KYB shocks are pretty cheap. About $17 a piece from Summit.
